Have you ever heard the expression ?Do as I say, not as I do?? In order for a community to be as healthy as possible, leaders, parents and role models need to set a good example. Different cultures and different areas across the nation have different ideas on what a healthy community is.
One definition from Phil Rabinowitz of a healthy community is ?Like a truly healthy human body, a truly healthy community is one in which all systems function as they should, and work together to make the community function well.? In an individual, health is, to a large extent, a result of all the body?s billions of cells getting what they need.? For a community, health is, to a large extent, the result of all citizens getting what they need, not only to survive, but to flourish.?
The Community Action Network explains why Community Health is so important, ?A healthy community reflects a sense of mental and physical well being and is the foundation for achieving all other goals. Good health is often taken for granted but is essential for a productive society. For example, every community needs a healthy workforce upon which to build its economy and healthier students are more equipped to learn and be successful academically. The graph below depicts the impacts and benefits of wellness in the workplace; however this concept is easily applied to any setting including an individual or a whole community. ?
With the New Year?s Resolution season in full force, it is a perfect time for communities to come together to help one another achieve a healthier lifestyle. Treadmills and elliptical trainers are a great way to get your daily dose of exercise whether you are in an office environment, after-school program or working out with your friends and family.? As you can see in the chart below a healthier person is a more productive person to the community and society as a whole in general.
