New robot testing terrorist bomb recipes

8 hrs.

Following?a?terrorist's recipe for blowing up a plane is a good way for human bomb-makers who study these recipes to risk death themselves. But a fearless new robot named "LEXI" can help the U.S. Department of Homeland Security cook up potentially unstable explosive mixtures for the sake of studying terrorist tactics.

LEXI works inside the "firing tanks" used for testing the power of homemade explosives at the High Explosives Applications Facility of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The robot's job is to take explosive cocktails from a vibrating mixer and place them on a firing table to prepare for detonation ? a task too dangerous for humans to handle.

"We need to see what a terrorist might use and how effective certain types of explosives might be in bringing down planes and other targets of interest," said Lee Glascoe, an engineer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

The robot hides behind a blast shield as an acoustic mixer vibrates to mix bomb ingredients into an explosive mixture. LEXI only comes out into the open to move the bomb mixture to the firing table before? rolling out the firing tank's door to escape the blast zone prior to detonation.

Such robotic precautions have enabled the National Explosives Engineering Sciences Security (NEXESS) Center ? a program is funded by the Department of Homeland Security ? to test the explosive power of possible bomb mixtures used by terrorists.

"There are a lot of materials that we look at, and many are safe to work with in contact, such as with your hands, if you know what you are doing," Glascoe explained. "But there are many that are not; particularly if they have certain additives like sulfur or aluminum."

LEXI represents a modified iRobot Packbot 510 ? a battle-tested robot made by the company that also produces Roomba vacuum cleaners. But LEXI's unique job of assisting bomb-making stands out compared with its fellow iRobots that usually help U.S. soldiers disable roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Before LEXI, we weren't able to look at some of these explosives because of safety concerns," Glascoe said.

Beljan nearly passes out on his way to the lead

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) ? Charlie Beljan was worried about keeping his PGA Tour card when he showed up at Disney for the final tournament of the year. That changed Friday over five frightening hours when he felt a shortness of breath and his heart racing, and eventually told his caddie that he thought he was going to die.

His chest heaved. He called for paramedics at the turn and was told his blood pressure was not good. He sat in the middle of the fairway to rest and kneeled on the green to try to steady himself.

In one of the most remarkable rounds of the year, the 28-year-old rookie fought through it for an 8-under 64 to take a three-shot lead.

Moments after signing his card, Beljan was loaded onto a stretcher. His eyes were closed, his head tilted back ? still wearing his visor ? and his arms were folded across his stomach as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance parked beyond the 18th green at the Palm Course.

"I think he was scared," said his caddie, Rick Adcox. "He kept saying he thought he was going to die. He just had that feeling. I don't know why. But it was spooky."

A few hours later, his agent sent a text to PGA Tour officials from Celebration Hospital that Beljan was waiting on tests, feeling better and hopeful of being discharged from the hospital Friday evening, though that was not certain.

Beljan was in the lead for the first time after any round going into the weekend at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. It could not have come at a better time because he is No. 139 on the money list, and only the top 125 keep their full cards for next year.

And yet the surreal day ended with Beljan not even sure he would be able to play on the weekend.

The tour said Beljan complained of an elevated heart rate, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Adcox said Beljan told him of numbness in his arms and he felt like he was going to faint.

"I thought they were going to stop him on 10 when they told him what the blood pressure was," he said. "He just said, 'I'm going to keep going until either I pass out or they take me off.' I kept saying, 'It doesn't matter to me. It's only a golf tournament. You've got many more.'"

The struggle was painfully clear the way Beljan constantly stooped over with his hands on his knees, backed off shots and tried to take deep breaths. That he wound up in the lead at 12-under 132 was simply amazing.

"It was bizarre," said Edward Loar, who played with Beljan. "I don't know if he thought he was going to make it. It sure didn't affect his golf. I heard him call for a paramedic on No. 9. Before the round, he said he was having a hard time breathing. Hopefully, the guy was all right. He was having a hard time breathing in there."

Beljan had a three-shot lead over seven players, including Henrik Stenson, Harris English, Charles Howell III and first-round leader Charlie Wi. He likely would need to finish in about 10th place to move into the top 125 and keep a job for next year ? assuming he can even play.

Golf didn't seem to be a big priority across from the Magic Kingdom, and there were concerns Beljan would even finish his round.

"I thought a lot of times he was going to stop," Adcox said. "I didn't even think he was going to start. He asked me to go find a doctor at the beginning, and I did. The paramedics ... were on No. 10 waiting on him. Blood pressure wasn't good then. For him to go on, that was pretty much his decision.

When he did get over a shot, the outcome generally was superb.

"He hit four of the best iron shots I've seen on the par 5s," Loar said. "It was awesome to watch."

Adcox realized something wasn't right when Beljan called for a doctor on the practice range. He drilled his long second shot onto the green at the par-5 first hole, and when the caddie handed him a putter, he said Beljan told him, "I don't feel very good."

"He got up there and made the eagle and still said he didn't feel good," Adcox said. "It's been not good all day. The score was good."

The caddie said they didn't pay attention to the score Beljan was putting together, and because they were playing on the Palm Course that doesn't have many leaderboards, they didn't even know Beljan was in the lead until the round was over.

They simply started a countdown ? one more hole, one more shot.

Beljan had two eagles and played the par 5s in 6 under. He struggled to finish, picking up a bogey on the 17th and missing the green to the right on the 18th. Facing a difficult chip, made even tougher that he looked wobbly over the ball, he hit a beautiful shot to 4 feet to save par.

The final two rounds move to the tougher Magnolia Course, which effectively feels like the final stage of Q-school for some of the players. Matt Jones and Mark Anderson, in that group at 9-under 135, can avoid going to the second stage of Q-school. Wi needs a win to have any hope of getting into the Masters. English is going for his first win.

Rod Pampling will have to sweat out his future at home in Dallas for the second straight year. He is No. 124 on the money list, made bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes and missed the cut by one shot. All that helps Pampling is that Billy Mayfair, who is No. 125 on the money list, also missed the cut, as did Gary Christian at No. 127.

Kevin Chappell was at No. 123, but he put together another solid round and suddenly is only four shots out of the lead. His card would appear to be safe.

No. 8 Seminoles rally to beat Hokies 28-22

(AP) ? Florida State got to see the Virginia Tech it expected on Thursday night at Lane Stadium.

When the eighth-ranked Seminoles were forced to validate their lofty ranking, and keep their Atlantic Coast Conference title plans intact, E.J. Manuel and the offense were more than equal to the task.

Manuel hit Rashad Greene with a short slant pass that Greene took 39 yards for a touchdown with 40 seconds to play, and the Seminoles survived a scare to beat the inspired Hokies 28-22.

"Nobody was flustered, nobody was afraid," Manuel said about the drive that came after a safety and a field goal had given Virginia Tech a 22-20 lead with just more than 2 minutes to play. "We all knew what we needed to do. We feel like we're built for things like that, and it showed tonight."

The Seminoles (9-1, 6-1 ACC) won their fourth straight and moved within a victory against Maryland on Nov. 17 of securing a spot in the ACC championship game Dec. 1. And they did it in dramatic fashion, with a 68-yard drive against a defense that had held it to nearly 300 yards below its 525-yard average.

Limited to minus-15 rushing yards for the game, Florida State got a 7-yard run from James Wilder Jr. on a fourth-and-1 play from its 41 on the final drive. Manuel, a Virginia Beach native, then hit Greg Dent for 13 yards two plays later. After he threw a pass away under pressure, Manuel hit Greene on a short slant against a zone defense that was out of position, and Greene took it all the way.

"It was basic, simple," Manuel said. "Get him the ball, and Rashad did the rest."

Manuel was sacked five times, but finished 25 for 42 for 326 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Greene caught six passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Dent caught the other scoring pass.

Manuel and Greene also teamed up late in the first half, after the Hokies had held them to no yards for the first 12 minutes of the second quarter. Manuel led a precise five-play, 71-yard drive, and hit Greene with consecutive passes of 22 and 25 yards, the latter giving them a 13-10 lead at the half.

Virginia Tech (4-6, 2-4) lost for the fifth time in six games and will have to win at Boston College and then at home against state rival Virginia to qualify for a bowl game for the 20th straight year.

"We've experienced some things this year that guys haven't experienced around here in a long time," coach Frank Beamer said. The Hokies are in the midst of their worst season in two decades.

Virginia Tech had gone ahead 22-20 on Cody Journell's 21-yard field goal with 2:19 remaining. The kick capped a 52-yard drive that stalled when Logan Thomas ran for 2 yards on third-and-3 from the 6.

"We actually had the perfect play drawn up, but we missed a block," Thomas said. "I probably would have scored."

The Hokies' go-ahead drive came after a stellar defensive series that ended in a safety.

After the Seminoles took over at their 20, Manuel threw incomplete on first down and James Gayle sacked him for a 10-yard loss on second down. A delay of game penalty moved the ball back to the 5 and, when the Seminoles tried running Devonta Freeman to the left, Jack Tyler caught him from behind in the end zone. Freeman tried to throw it, an illegal forward pass, and the safety pulled the Hokies to 20-19.

It also gave them the ball, but when they only managed a field goal, the Seminoles made them pay.

"Thursday night? Virginia Tech? This is what I watched every year and now I've experienced it, and it's crazy," Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner said.

The Seminoles opened a 20-10 lead with a 49-yard touchdown drive after recovering a fumble by Hokies wide receiver Marcus Davis. Manuel completed three passes on the six-play drive, including a 10-yard bullet to Dent in the back of the end zone with 6:53 left in the third quarter.

Virginia Tech replied quickly, driving 80 yards in eight plays. Thomas hit Corey Fuller for 44 and 14 yards on the drive, and ran it in himself from the 5, bulling over several defenders.

The game was delayed for about 10 minutes in the third quarter when Virginia Tech safety Michael Cole was hurt and lay face-down and motionless on the field. As the crowd stood in silence, Cole was taken away by ambulance. The school said he had a neck sprain, but had feeling and movement in his extremities.

The Seminoles came in with the nation's No. 3 scoring offense, averaging nearly 45 points, but the Hokies neutralized it for the first 27 minutes, allowing just a pair of field goals by Dustin Hopkins. The kicker finished the night with nine points, leaving him two shy of breaking the NCAA record for points by a kicker. Boise State's Kyle Brotzman had 439 from 2007-10.

The Seminoles twice started drives near midfield early, and got nothing out of them. The first ended with Donovan Riley's interception of Manuel's pass at the 1, and the second with a three-and-out punt.

But after Thomas drove Virginia Tech 68 yards for the game's first touchdown, giving the Hokies a 10-6 lead, Manuel and the Seminoles ? held to zero yards at that point in the second quarter ? clicked.

Manuel hit Kevin Benjamin for 12 and 17 yards, and then Greene beat Kyle Fuller twice.

On the Hokies' drive, Thomas connected with Fuller's older brother, Corey, on three third-down plays. The first went for 33 yards on third-and-9, the second for 15 yards on third-and-4 and the last for 4 yards and the touchdown on a perfectly thrown third-and-2 fade to the right corner of the end zone.

Florida State took a 6-3 lead after Tyler Hunter intercepted Thomas' pass at the Hokies 34. Virginia Tech had a chance to tie when it recovered a punt that was fumbled by Hunter at the Seminoles 30 on the next possession, but three plays netted only 4 yards and Journell's 43-yard field goal was wide left.

Mail.Ru cuts stakes in Groupon, Facebook, Zygna

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian email-to-social networking group Mail.Ru cut its stakes in U.S. internet firms Groupon, Facebook, and Zygna, according to the company's website.

Mail.Ru now has a 0.52 percent stake in the world's largest social networking site Facebook, 0.16 percent of U.S. game maker Zynga and 0.84 percent of daily deal website Groupon.

As of October 30, it had a 1.17 percent stake in Zynga, a 0.75 percent stake in Facebook and 4.12 percent of shares in Groupon.

It could raise between $200 million and $250 million from the sales, said Anastasia Obukhova, an analyst at VTB Capital in Moscow. Mail.Ru declined to comment on the disposals.

"We've always been very clear that Groupon, Zynga and Facebook, positioned inside of Mail, are financial assets, not strategic ones," said Matthew Hammond, the investor relations director at Mail.Ru Group.

At the end of October, Mail.Ru, part-owned by metals tycoon Alisher Usmanov, sold 16 million Facebook shares, worth around $370 million, on top of a more than $700 million sale as part of Facebook's initial public offering. That was followed by a hefty dividend payout to Mail.Ru's shareholders.

APIs And Private Equity ? European Startups Address Both Ends Of The Spectrum In One Day

d0b12cd6282d11e2bcd822000a9f129c_7Two signs the the European startup eco-system is maturing came in the form of two major events today. The first was the NOAH COnference in London which has now matured after three years growth into a mid-to-late stage tech and investment where you'll find late stage VCs rubbing shoulders with Private Equity people. This is all too rare an event in Europe given there is so match early stage startup activity, and probably something a number of other event players are eye-ing up with interest given the bulging hallways at the conference venue. The second was literally at the other end of the spectrum, but no less interesting. The API Conference coming to London was evidence that startups and prosperous API businesses, with successful developer programs, are at least as much part of the emerging European scene as any consumer-facing tech startup. In major news, Duedil, the largest source of free private company information in the UK and Ireland, launched the first transversable API for company information - at least in the UK.

Daily Love Scopes ? Blog Archive ? November 7 Wednesday

Posted: November 7th, 2012 | Author: DLQ | Filed under: 2012 | No Comments ?

These daily horoscopes can also be found on http://xstrologyscopes.com

Aries: The energy of the day encourages growth but this not something you need to rush into. Small, persistent messages through normal lines of communication can create a bigger picture. Just let the pieces of the puzzle put themselves together until everything is clear. For many of you, this energy creates the perfect opportunity to take up a new direction. This may mean you choose what you would like to do with your life, and/or the kind of relationships you would like to enjoy from now on. You may be moving on and leaving the past behind but that doesn?t mean you cannot learn from it. By doing so you can achieve a new and more brilliant future. No need to try and process everything at once, go with flow and take one step at a time.

Taurus: Many of you may find yourselves looking for a little temporary romance or the chance at love and happiness. Either way this could come in the form of someone you know that you didn?t see coming. He or she may have or will be revealing their true feelings for you and you will not be able to get their declaration out of your head. The possibilities before you are so exciting that you just cannot resist it. You will start to see and think things about this person you haven?t before and you will really like where it leads you. If you are attached in some capacity, you are feeling the urge for closeness and passion towards your lover. What you may not know yet is they are as well. Whatever you do, try not to break the bed.

Gemini: Your feelings and passions are strong and compelling at this time. You are done with the bullshit, done with the dead ends. You are tired of picking unsuitable mates and this time you refuse to settle for less. If you haven?t broken up with your previous lover, this may come today if this was something you were working towards. Whether you are or are unattached, you will be encouraged to find someone who can be a companion on a mental, spiritual, and physical level as well. The type of relationship that can satisfy you now is one based on a more spiritual outlook than some of the previous ones have been. When you begin to broaden your social circle, you will find that person you seek.

Cancer: For many of you, discussions about personal topics will be the majority of your day. This is good time to clear the air in your personal relationships but you will be able to do in a way that isn?t hurtful or bridge burning. Thanks to your easy imaginative thoughts, that will not be the only thing you can accomplish. This energy will spark a bit of daydreaming and reflecting on your past but it will also enhance your creativity and encourage you to follow your dreams. Just be careful that the thoughts from your past do not fully affect your current view. You have grown since then and so has your perspective. If you are unattached you will meet people who love to talk about a variety of subjects. One may be the person your heart desires.

Leo: This is a positive and refreshing time period for you. Progressive changes in your life and relationships make this an exciting time. What may add to this for some of you is the speculation surrounding your love life. To you the changes do not seem extraordinary enough to warrant all of this attention but to others, the revolution in your life and relationships will be evident. As the path forward begins to form before you, you may worry about how your love life will be affected. So long as you stay on course, the positive energy will seep in and surround every aspect in your life. If you are having any doubts or worries, you need to shake off that pessimistic view and allow these blessing to unfold. Go on and take that step forward. This is your time.

Virgo: You may be in the midst of a transformation right now that will likely cover your life in general and your intimate affairs. During this transformation you are caught up in a bit of fantasy, your thoughts are dreamy and certainly far away. Because your imagination is heightened it is possible that you will gain some powerful insights about life or your current relationship if you are so attached. This insight raises your intuition level which will strengthen your emotional commitments or benefit your romantic endeavors. Those of you either in a new relationship or early stages of dating someone may find that this connection has far more potential then you first thought. Keep this positive frame of mind and focus this energy to building a solid future.

Libra: Your mind is working overtime today and the sudden realizations that come with it give you a better idea on what?s really going on. One of those realizations is a clear understanding of what your limitations are and the true obstacles you need to work around or eliminate. Knowing this makes what is demanded of you clear enough that you can easy meet or succeed them and know where you stand. With this clarity your feelings and emotions are rather powerful but it should hopefully give you a little more confidence in your abilities. If there is a problem in your love life, take a positive point of view and look at it as an opportunity. Can you turn this obstacle into something that will benefit those involved? I know you can.

Scorpio: If you haven?t already, you will be cleaning out the mess that your love life has become. Some of you may be or have been involved in a rather unhealthy relationship that has held you back from growth and success in other areas of your life. You have tried so hard to work through this but you have gained a certain clarity that has revealed your lovers true colors. You may have been through quite a time in terms of this relationship and it has left you with a few lessons well learned. Though this may be rather quick, the possibility of a new kind of relationship may fall into your lap. You will begin to develop a new set of friendships that reflect who you are today. Eventually, when you are ready, one of your new friends may turn into a new love.

Sagittarius: You are conflicted and this isn?t a good situation for an Archer to be in. Your relationship is not going well and while you know it no longer has a positive purpose in your life, you can?t help but think there is something left to fight for. You are comfortable in this routine and stuck between a sense of duty to your lover and your yearning for true love and emotional satisfaction. Your mind wants you to move on but heart won?t let you. You need to ask yourself, how much more can you take and do you think that the change you need or that is obviously needed here from both of you, can be done. It is possible that the answer to this is no and you will need to let go of this person you cherish.

Capricorn: This is a time for new adventures in your life which extend to your friendships and intimate affairs. Many of you will feel the urge to explore new possibilities in your relationships and rid yourself of this restless feeling. Some of you may have felt that a boring and draining pattern was beginning to develop in your relationship or life in general and you need to break free of it before it takes you under. You are committed to this change and want to achieve a status that brings you both emotional and physical wealth as well as a stronger love. The energy surrounding you will help you build the foundations for this to happen and open up the doors to the possibilities that will take you towards your new direction. Things are looking up for you.

Aquarius: Life is a process of constant change and nothing ever remains the same. You will be reminded that with love especially, the two involved continue to grow and develop not only together but individually. This growth will likely present a few new options today for you and your sweetheart to consider. Are you and your loved one in state of continuous and positive development? You two may be close but not completely there and should really consider a few new options. Be careful though. Right now both of you may be going through a bit of an ego trip and looking out for number one rather than the relationship. Things may get heated but if you can be conscious of this problem before it explodes, you can turn this into something good.

Pisces: Your emotions may be sensitive right now and your intuition on overload. If you are recently unattached or ready to get back to dating, you feel drawn to people that may not be completely what you are looking for because you can connect with them based one something from you past. Embrace your adventurous side and keep moving forward. You know you do not want a sentimental kind of romance and should not allow yourself to feel any sort of nostalgia either. It might be a good idea that you surround yourself with people or get involved with experiences that take you away from your old status quo and put you with people who are trying to be as adventurous as you would like to be. This should help you achieve your goal.
