Schneider is not new to entrepreneurship and the demanding schedule needed to make a retail venture successful. ? She has always been "obsessed" with fashion design and, after high school, created her own line of jewelry which she sold at home parties. ?She also worked in retail while going to school and gained valuable skills in business management and sales. ? ??

It was during this time that Schneider also attended Canisius College and earned a dual degree in English and Communications which led her to a job at Buffalo Spree Publishing before pursuing her current career in teaching. ?This fall, she started her fourth year as a Reading Specialist in the Lancaster School District. ?Her hectic schedule still allows her to closely manage Chic and Sweet and their four part-time employees. ?Her business is clearly a passion and its success is a priority.

Schneider is very excited by the recent commercial growth on Hertel. ?The opening of Spot Coffee and Globe Market represents significant investment and has increased foot traffic. ?New restaurants such as Mes Que and The Village Beer Merchant are also indications of other entrepreneurs' confidence in the future of Hertel Avenue. ?

While there are key geographic and demographic differences, Hertel is often compared to the Elmwood Avenue strip. ?Hertel may be approaching a critical mass of shopping venues and restaurants, but Schneider feels that a united marketing effort, similar to that of the Elmwood Village Association, is needed if the street is to draw a comparable volume of traffic.?

To that end, she has been meeting routinely with other store owners to discuss ways to collectively promote Hertel from Parker to Delaware. ?For example, more year-round events, such as the Hertel Holiday Walk in December or Shop Rock and Stroll Friday nights during the summer, could bring many new shoppers to the area.?

If their venture continues to thrive, Schneider and her husband may consider opening another business. ?"We really love the city and want it to be vibrant. ?We are always thinking bigger and better." ?Hopefully, they'll take another chance on Hertel. ?

Rallying the troops: Floyd County Republicans bring five big-ticket speakers to rally

NEW ALBANY ? Republican leaders locally and across the state shared a common message at the Republicans of Floyd County?s Reagan Day Rally ? they have 52 days to energize their base to take back Congress and the executive branch.

Five leaders spoke to about 50 supporters Saturday morning about what they thought would help get the country and the state back on track.

Richard Mourdock, the state?s treasurer and republican candidate for U.S. Senate against Democrat Joe Donnelly and Libertarian Andrew Horning, said in terms of the presidential race, he thought President Barack Obama?s widely criticized ?you didn?t build that? comment shows that he?s out of touch with the country and his ideas about increasing tax rates on the highest earners in the country.

?That statement told me, too, that Barack Obama doesn?t understand America and he doesn?t appreciate the potential of capitalism,? Mourdock said. ?It?s not an evil force.?

He said this November?s election is a choice of two visions for the county ? one of American exceptionalism and another of what he described as the European model that demands more of citizens as government grows.

But he said he thinks the Republican Party has a ?secret weapon? in its ability to mobilize its supporters like it did in 2010 and in the May primary election.

Todd Young, who is seeking re-election to Indiana?s 9th district in the House of Representatives against challenger Democrat Shelli Yoder, said he?s optimistic for America?s future, but not without some concerns.

?Now when I look into the future, however, I pause,? Young said. ?I?m not pessimistic because I think we have the ability to do the very same thing Americans have always done. I pause because there are two visions competing for the future of this country.?

He said he thinks the Republican agenda puts its trust in the American people while Obama?s holds the private sector and private individuals responsible for some of its economic woes.

But he also criticized the president for his stimulus package from 2009, as well as his approach to health care reform, government regulations on business and support of tax increases on ?the very people that will get us out of this mess.?

But he said he still has hope for the country.

?You cannot staunch the spirit of the American people,? Young said. ?I still believe in the American people, I know you still believe in the American people. These stories I?ve told today can either define America?s future as they have defined America?s past, or they can become long-lost relics of a once-great nation.?

Tony Bennett, who is seeking re-election as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and will face Democrat Glenda Ritz, said his approach to education reform has garnered a lot of negative attention, but he thinks the results have proven themselves.

He said? with 85.7 percent of Indiana high schoolers graduating and an 8 percent overall rise in state test scores, those two things show what the changes to the public school system have done.

?Some of you probably go to Little League parks, go to church or social events with teachers and you?ve heard this line: ?Tony Bennett is out to destroy public education ??? Bennett said. ?If that was what we ran on and what we tried to do for four years, we have failed.?

He also said the work of Rhonda Rhoads, Indiana?s representative for the state?s 70th district and Ron Grooms, Indiana State senator for the 46th district, helped set the agenda for education reform in the state, but faced tough opposition.

?The toughest thing they had to do was go home and face stacked town hall meetings by the teachers unions and have a lot of vitriolic rhetoric spewed their way,? Bennett said. ?And they?ve stood in the face of that, they continue to stand in the face of that, and I commend [them] for that.?

He said he thinks his opposition doesn?t have much of a plan other than to reverse what his team has done and charged conservatives to challenge his opposition on that.

Dave Matthews, Floyd County Commissioner, spent a lot of time comparing some of Ronald Reagan?s speeches from 1964 to the times he feels the country is facing now. He said this year?s election marks an important part of the country?s future.

?This year, we stand at the doors of a great decision,? Matthews said. ?We can choose to continue to follow the policies of enslavery [sic] to a failing economy, and increasing government control of our lives, or we can choose to follow the only paths that have ever brought American greatness.?

Matthews faces Democratic incumbent Chuck Freiberger in November.

Last to the podium was Mike Pence, Republican candidate for the governor?s seat. He noted that the optimism of Indiana residents seems to be down when it comes to government and what it does for them.

?But it hasn?t been until the last couple of years that I?ve heard Hoosiers use the word ?scared? to talk about politics and about public life,? Pence said. ?And I think people are scared right now because frankly, let?s be honest, because both parties have let the American people down to one degree or another in the last 10 years.?

He said he thinks Indiana will not only lead the Midwest, but also serve as an example for the whole country if the right leaders make it into office.

Pence faces Democrat John Gregg and Libertarian Rupert Boneham.

3Taps Files Countersuit, Says Craigslist Is Anticompetitive. 'We Just ...

Craigslist may have a peace sign as part of its logo, but the war over its data continues. As TechCrunch reported it would yesterday, 3Taps has today filed a countersuit against Craigslist in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, responding point by point to Craigslist?s allegations of copyright infringement and further levelling counter-accusations at Craigslist of uncompetitive and antitrust behavior. We?ve embedded the full suit below.

Craigslist has been suing 3Taps and another company, PadMapper, over the use of Craiglist?s listings data in 3Taps? API, with PadMapper named in the suit for being a user of that API.

So far, it?s only 3Taps named in the counterclaim, but TechCrunch understands that this could potentially change, as there are a number of companies that have been issued with cease and desist letters by Craigslist. One that has talked to TechCrunch noted that if it gets named in Craigslist?s suit, it will consider joining the counterclaim.

This story began life as some startups innovating on the fact that Craigslist data is freely searchable on Google but is notoriously difficult to navigate, and then took a proprietary turn when Craigslist started to crack down on them using its data. Now it has reached a decidedly legal juncture.

While several of the smaller companies that were issued with C&Ds by Craigslist simply shut down operations, 3Taps has taken a different route.

Represented by the high-power law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, 3Taps and its founder/CEO Greg Kidd feel that this is more than just a fight about getting to use Craiglist data, but also about how data in the public domain should be treated legally, what rights third parties should have to this data, and what the separation should be between technological innovation and information. As Kidd noted in his statement on the suit:

?The issue here is who gets to use exchange related data ? product descriptions and prices ? in a vital online marketplace. By allowing search engines to capture this information, Craigslist is making it publicly available in an attempt to drive users to its site, yet refuses to accept the consequences: consumer-driven innovation,? Greg Kidd, the founder and CEO of 3Taps, said in a statement. ?That public data could be leveraged to spur innovation that will render markets more efficient and create better experiences for consumers. But Craigslist would prefer to stymie any potential competition at the expense of its users.

?While we respect what Craigslist has accomplished in attaining dominance over online classified advertising, we object to them using that market power illegally to stifle innovation and hurt consumers. As craigslist spends heavily to bully and intimidate companies that challenge them, consumers are deprived of better ways to find and execute real-time exchange transactions.?

Sherwin Siy, VP of legal affairs at data advocacy group Public Knowledge, believes that Craigslist may have some difficulty proving their position on copyright:

The vast majority of postings on Craigslist aren?t going to be covered by copyright anyway. For something to be copyrighted, it has to have at least a ?modicum of creativity.? My Craigslist posting about how I have a chair for sale for $25 (OBO) is not at all creative. And even if there?s a minority of posts that are creative, the copyright in those posts belongs to the people who wrote them, not Craigslist.

Craigslist might be trying to claim that their terms of service require posters to sign their rights over to Craigslist, but that?s highly unlikely to be held a valid transfer of rights by a court.

Basically, there?s not much of a copyright case there for Craigslist.

From what we understand, Craigslist now has a 20-day period to respond to the countersuit, with a possible month extension to that.

As for damages, Kidd notes that any antitrust case has a loss-of-business, triple-damages result. ?And after those C&D orders, most of our customers left us. But that?s not the purpose of this lawsuit. It?s just to get them to stop suing us and everyone else. We and others want to be able to to use the data without fear of being sued.?

As for others joining 3Taps, Kidd is hesitant: ?They could join the suit, but I?m not sure I want to invite anyone into a swimming pool with an unknown level of expense. And we don?t want more litigation.?

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian president said in remarks published Friday that he is adamant his regime will not fall and he also lashed out at Gulf countries, which he accused of using their enormous oil wealth to try to drive him from power.

Bashar Assad's comments came as an opposition group, the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, accused the regime of being behind the disappearance of two of its leaders.

Abdul-Aziz al-Kheir and Ayas Ayyash were expected to take part in a conference Sunday in Damascus by some 20 Syrian groups that are calling for Assad to step down. But they disappeared Thursday along with a friend who had picked them up at Damascus International Airport, the group said.

The group's head, Hassan Abdul-Azim, told The Associated Press by telephone that the regime was believed to be behind the disappearance.

Syria's crisis began in March last year with anti-government demonstrations inspired by the Arab Spring and demanding reforms. The protests were met with a brutal crackdown by the regime. Syria later became embroiled in a civil war between forces fighting for Assad and those trying to topple him.

Activists now say that nearly 30,000 people have been killed since the crisis began, the vast majority of them civilians.

After Assad's remarks were published, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi told state-run TV on Friday that the president had received nine Egyptian journalists and had a chat with them about the latest developments in the country.

The minister said none of the journalists took notes as the meeting was considered a "personal visit," but a reporter for the weekly Al-Ahram Al-Arabi published some of what was said.

The weekly quoted Assad as saying that the rebels "will not succeed" and that a foreign military intervention such as the one that helped topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi will "not be repeated" in Syria.

In his remarks, Assad also launched one of his harshest attacks on Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which have been among his strongest critics and backers of the opposition, saying they are trying to influence the region with their money.

"They think their money can buy geography, history and a regional role," Assad said, according to the Egyptian weekly.

"They are giving terrorists weapons and money with hope of repeating the Libyan model," Assad added. "Instead of helping regional stability, they are supplying armed elements with weapons and training in order to weaken the Syrian state."

The upheaval in Syria presents an opportunity for the Gulf's Sunni rulers to bolster their influence and possibly leave Shiite powerhouse Iran without its critical alliances that flow through Damascus. Assad's regime, which is allied strongly with Iran, is led by the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Syria's ties with the Gulf nations have been strained in the past ? Assad once called Saudi King Abdullah and other Arab leaders "half men" for being critical of Hezbollah over the 34-day war between the Lebanese Shiite militant group and Israel in 2006.

In the briefing, Assad added that the only way to solve the Syrian crisis is through "dialogue with the opposition" and that the "door for dialogue is open."

Most Syrian opposition groups reject any talks with the regime, saying they will not accept anything less than Assad's departure from power and the dissolving of his regime's security agencies.

Abdul-Azim, the opposition leader, repeated that stance and said the opposition wants a "new regime that represents the will of the people."

He added his group will go ahead with the plans for Sunday's opposition conference despite the disappearance of the two leaders. The gathering will invite European ambassadors, envoys from China and Russia, which back the regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday that nearly 30,000 Syrians have been killed during the 18-month uprising against the Assad regime, providing an updated death toll.

The Observatory's count includes 20,935 civilians; 1,153 army defectors fighting alongside the rebels; and 7,141 Syrian troops fighting for the Assad regime ? which gives a total of 29,229, said the head of the group, Rami Abdul-Rahman.

The list is compiled from reports by witnesses and medical staff, he said, adding that he only includes those identified by name or whose death was authenticated by amateur video. Several thousand who are presumed dead, including pro-Assad troops, have been kept off the list because the bodies could not be identified.

Another Syrian opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the overall death toll at 26,405. However, its count does not include Syrian troops killed in battle. The LCC relies on a network of activists in Syria to collect its information.

Fighting in Syria has intensified in recent week, with the regime increasingly relying on airstrikes to try to drive rebels out of territory they are holding, particularly in the country's north. The air attacks, along with the use of heavy weapons by some of the rebels, have driven up the daily death toll, said Abdul-Rahman.

On Thursday, more than 250 people were killed, including 199 civilians, five army defectors and 46 regimes soldiers, Abdul-Rahman said. August has been the bloodiest month so far, with nearly 5,000 dead.

Meanwhile, in Syria's northeastern town of Ein al-Arab, a gunman on a motorcycle shot dead a leading Kurdish opposition figure, Mahmoud Wali, also known as Abu Jandi, as he walked out of his office late Thursday, Kurdish activists Mustafa Osso and Ibrahim Issa said.

Wali was a senior member of the Kurdish National Council, which includes several Kurdish groups.

Osso said it is still not clear who was behind what he said was a "political assassination."

On Friday, activists reported clashes and shelling in different areas around Syria, with the fighting being most intense in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial capital. The fighting there came a day after regime airstrikes hit a gas station in northern Syria, setting off a fiery explosion that killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens.

Mushroom-derived compound lengthens survival in dogs with cancer, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Dogs with hemangiosarcoma that were treated with a compound derived from the Coriolus versicolor mushroom had the longest survival times ever reported for dogs with the disease. These promising findings offer hope that the compound may one day offer cancer patients -- human and canine alike -- a viable alternative or complementary treatment to traditional chemotherapies.

The study was conducted by two University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine faculty. Dorothy Cimino Brown is professor and chair of the Department of Clinical Studies and director of the Veterinary Clinical Investigation Center. Jennifer Reetz is an attending radiologist in the Department of Clinical Studies. They published their findings in an open-access article in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

The Coriolus versicolor mushroom, known commonly as the Yunzhi mushroom, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years. The compound in the mushroom that is believed to have immune-boosting properties is polysaccharopeptide, or PSP. In the last two decades, some studies have suggested that PSP also has a tumor-fighting effect.

"There have been a series of studies looking at groups of people with cancer," Cimino Brown said. "The issue with those studies is that they weren't necessarily measuring what most people would think is the most clinically important result, which is, do people taking PSP live longer?"

To address this critical question, Cimino Brown and Reetz pursued a study in dogs with naturally occurring hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive, invasive cancer that arises from the blood cells and typically affects the spleen. It commonly strikes golden retrievers and German shepherds.

Fifteen dogs that had been diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma participated in the trial. Divided into three groups of five, each group received a different dose -- 25, 50 or 100 mg/kg/day -- of I'm-Yunity, a formulation of PSP that has been tested for consistency and good manufacturing processes.

The owners were instructed to give their dog capsules of I'm-Yunity, compounded by Penn pharmacists, daily. Each month, the owners brought their dogs to Penn's Ryan Veterinary Hospital for follow-up visits. There, the researchers took blood samples and conducted ultrasounds to determine the extent that tumors developed or grew and spread in the dogs' bodies.

Based on the ultimate endpoints -- how quickly the tumors progressed and how long the dogs actually lived -- the results of the researchers' trial suggest that the I'm-Yunity was effectively fighting the tumors.

"We were shocked," Cimino Brown said. "Prior to this, the longest reported median survival time of dogs with hemangiosarcoma of the spleen that underwent no further treatment was 86 days. We had dogs that lived beyond a year with nothing other than this mushroom as treatment."

There were not statistically significant differences in survival between the three dosage groups, though the median survival time was highest in the 100 mg group, at 199 days, eclipsing the previously reported median survival time.

The results were so surprising, in fact, that the researchers asked Penn Vet pathologists to recheck the dogs' tissue biopsies to make sure that the dogs really had the disease.

"They reread the samples and said, yes, it's really hemangiosarcoma," Cimino Brown said.

Chemotherapy is available for treating hemangiosarcoma, but many owners opt not to pursue that treatment once their dog is diagnosed.

"It doesn't hugely increase survival, it's expensive and it means a lot of back and forth to the vet for the dog," Cimino Brown said. "So you have to figure in quality of life."

While I'm-Yunity is not inexpensive, if proven effective, it would offer owners a way of extending their pet's life without regular trips to the vet. As an added benefit, Cimino Brown and Reetz have found no evidence of adverse effects from the PSP treatment.

The researchers are now getting ready to pursue further trials of I'm-Yunity in dogs with hemangiosarcoma to confirm and refine their results. One trial will compare I'm-Yunity to a placebo for those owners who opt not to pursue chemotherapy in their pet and another will compare the compound to standard-of-care chemotherapy.

Depending on those results, veterinarians could eventually prescribe the compound for treating hemangiosarcoma, and perhaps other cancers, in dogs. The company that manufacturers I'm-Yunity may also pursue large-scale clinical trials in humans.

"Although hemangiosarcoma is a very sad and devastating disease," Cimino Brown said, "in the long term, if we prove that this works, this treatment can be a really nice alternative for owners to have increased quality time with their pet at the end of its life."

The study was funded by a grant from Chinese Medicine Holdings LTD.

Jamaica beats US 2-1 in World Cup qualifier

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? After Clint Dempsey scored the fastest U.S. goal in World Cup qualifying, the Americans played a listless game, lost to Jamaica for the first time and put pressure on themselves to win their home match against Jamaica next week.

Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton scored on free kicks as the Reggae Boyz rallied for a historic 2-1 victory Friday night, their first win in 19 games against the Americans.

"Jamaica deserved that win. They were hungrier and they were more determined," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "We have to fix it now."

Jamaica (2-0-1) leads Group A with seven points at the halfway point, and the U.S. (1-1-1) dropped into a second-place tie with Guatemala (1-1-1), which overcame an early deficit to win 3-1 at home over Antigua and Barbuda (0-2-1).

"We have to do to do a better job with concentration," American goalkeeper Tim Howard said. "To give away six, seven free kicks in that area is not good enough."

The U.S. hosts Jamaica on Tuesday night at Columbus, Ohio.

"We need to figure out a way, whether it's more width, whether it's more crosses, whether it's just doing a better job of keeping the ball," Dempsey said.

Playing his first competitive match in three months, Dempsey put the U.S. ahead 35 seconds in. The 60th-ranked Reggae Boyz, who had been 0-10-8 against the U.S., rallied with goals in the 23rd and 62nd minutes on free kicks caused by fouls from Kyle Beckerman and Maurice Edu.

"Next game we have to limit the mistakes and create more chances.," Edu said. "We are disappointed but we still have more games to play."

Jamaican fans ran onto the field when the match ended.

"It means a lot to me to beat the U.S. for the first time," said Shelton, who plays for Karabukspor in Turkey. "I cried after the game. I have never cried after such an important game. I believe our team is a very good team and to create history was sweet."

The top two nations advance to next year's six-nation regional finals, which will produce three qualifiers for the 2014 tournament in Brazil. The U.S. is not a dire situation yet, with home games against Jamaica and Guatemala, and a road match at Antigua.

"We will have to step it up a level and definitely have to watch their free kicks, because they were very dangerous obviously on the free kicks," Beckerman said.

Missing injured Landon Donovan (hamstring) and Michael Bradley (thigh), the 33rd-ranked U.S. was dominated in the midfield, was outshot 9-7 and dropped to 0-1-4 in qualifiers at The Office, as Independence Park is known.

The U.S. went ahead after Edu played a through pass to Herculez Gomez, whose initial shot rebounded off goalkeeper Dwayne Miller and follow-up ricocheted off a defender. The second shot rebounded to Dempsey, who scored from about 10 yards for his 28th international goal. He has scored in all three U.S. qualifiers this year.

Dempsey's previous match was a World Cup qualifier at Guatemala on June 12. Dempsey had held the record for fastest U.S. goal in a qualifier when he scored 53 seconds in against Barbados in 2008.

"Maybe we were leading too early," Klinsmann said.

Dempsey moved from Fulham to Tottenham on Aug. 31 just before the transfer deadline closed and had missed the start of the English Premier League season while his club status was sorted out.

Jamaica increasingly dominated the midfield, and the Reggae Boyz tied the score after a late tackle by Beckerman on Austin gave Jamaica a free kick about 28 yards out. Austin took the kick and his shot deflected off Beckerman's right foot on the defensive wall and past Howard.

Beckerman was replaced in the 58th minute by Danny Williams, who made his first competitive appearance for the U.S. Williams also had been eligible to play for Germany.

In my role at ADVISA, I spend my time almost exclusively with CEOs and Human Resource Directors ? two potentially powerful leadership roles that often determine an organization?s level of success.? 1. Know what matters to your CEO.

Being single seems like the plague to some women. It?s like a disease that is searching for a cure. Normally, that cure is in the form of a man. But sometimes being single is better than being in a relationship. I know it may seem farfetched to some, but hear me out. After some time, I can say that I have recently found joy in my single status.

No, seriously.

I haven?t given up on love and hope that a man, marriage, and a family will come, but I have decided that there are just some things that aren?t worth me handing in my single-girl card for. Nope. Not just yet.

Of course a cheating man is one of those things. And most women, besides the ones on any VH1 reality show, would agree; but I?m referring to the things that are a bit more subtle and less scandalous than my man tipping out on me. These things, although they seem small, make for a bad relationship that usually leave me feeling as if the single life is more attractive.

Within the last two years, I have had a couple of opportunities to be in a relationship; and while they were initially tempting offers I quickly?and sometimes not so quickly?realized that being single was definitely the better option.

Without a bit of hesitation, I can easily say that I would rather be single than be in a relationship that lacks trust. Trust issues, like communication problems, are usually at the root of most troubled relationships. It?s really simple, without trust you have no relationship.

We all know this, but often neglect the notion because we want love; but I?ve learned firsthand that no amount of love can resuscitate a relationship that has been killed by the lack of trust. Being single is much better than dealing with a man I don?t trust or one that doesn?t trust me. It?s a headache that single girls have the luxury of not dealing with.

The lack of trust is something that most would say makes for an unhealthy relationship, but there are other things that often go unnoticed that make a relationship just as bad. One of these things is allowing one or both parties to get too comfortable. I would rather be single than be in a relationship that?s just comfortable.

?Surviving is not enough? is one of my mottos in life. To live just to say you?re surviving is not living. I want more. And the same is applicable in relationships. I would prefer being single than being in a relationship that?s just holding on by the threads of comfort. Same routine. Small talk. No excitement. Just comfort. No thanks! Being single is more exciting and less mundane than sticking around in a comfortable relationship.

I would rather be single than be in a relationship that requires me to make compromises that jeopardize my dreams or go against my beliefs. Some men require a lot, others require too much, and some are just unrealistic with their requirements. I?ve dated men who say they support me and my endeavors, however, they only support me when those endeavors don?t interfere with their time. If a relationship requires me to neglect goals simply to satisfy a man, I?d rather be single until I find someone on the same page.

My I?d-rather-be-single list isn?t a ?fake-me out? attempt to enjoy the single life or a cover-up of ?I-Can?t-Get-A-Man-Syndrome.? Honestly, being single is sometimes more appealing than being in some relationships. I have experienced the nuisances that unhealthy relationships can bring and found that being single has actually been the cure.

I am also the first to admit that most people, especially women, want to be in a relationship at some point in their lives. As people, ultimately, we all need love, and yes, it?s a wonderful thing. But here?s the thing: love is wonderful when it?s the right kind of love, and even then, something so wonderful can become hurtful and draining when it?s not right or based on the right things. Therefore, why put yourself through the ringer to tell be coupled up? Being single, at least until you find the right kind of man and the right kind of respect and love, is much better than being in a relationship when it?s wrong.

Todd Akin Still Finds Support After Republican Convention

Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., still has supporters both in his home state and in high places, despite furor over his comments surrounding "legitimate rape" and abortion made two weeks ago. KCUR interviewed voters attending a fireworks display in downtown Kansas City Saturday. Another supporter came in the form of Newt Gingrich.

* Gina Townley told KCUR she still supports Akin for his conservative views on government, not necessarily abortions. Townley said she feels Akin is "very out of touch" yet she supports "a conservative government."

* Akin has Townley's support even though her mother was a victim of rape herself. Of the three voters interviewed by the radio station, two said they would still vote for Akin despite misgivings. A third said she was undecided. Two other interviewees at a separate event said they support Akin because of the national GOP abandoning him instead of supporting one of their own.

* Political science professor George Connor of Missouri State University told KCUR he wasn't surprised by Akin's support because he and Sen. Claire McCaskill "diverge on so many other issues."

* Akin has another supporter in Gingrich. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Gingrich was interviewed Sunday morning by NBC's "Meet the Press." Gingrich said, "I think Todd Akin was the choice of the people in Missouri, and Todd Akin has publicly apologized."

* Gingrich also blasted GOP strategist and fundraiser Karl Rove for his comments about finding the representative "mysteriously murdered." Gingrich said in his interview, "In the age of Gabby Giffords, it is not a joke to say that a member of Congress ought to get murdered."

* Conservative political activist Phyllis Schlafly on Saturday called for Rove to resign. KMOX reports Schlafly called Rove's comments, "the most malicious remark ever made in Republican politics." Schlafly is a St. Louis native and founder of the Eagle Forum. She further said anyone who hires Rove will be tarnished due to his remarks about Akin's demise.

* Supporters are behind Akin despite fundraisers pulling out. The national Republican Party threatened to withhold funding if Akin doesn't step down. The Associated Press reported Thursday the Missouri Farm Bureau is reconsidering its endorsement of Akin. A "majority" of the farm bureau's county leaders want to vote on whether or not to change the endorsement despite 99 percent of the organization's members supporting Akin before his comments.

* The news of Akin's supporters comes less than a week after former Gingrich aide Rick Tyler said he has been hired by the controversial representative's campaign. The Associated Press reported Thursday Tyler joined Akin's staff just as the representative resumed normal campaigning in Missouri.
