Canada opens U18 women?s hockey tourney with win over Hungary

The Canadian team picked up where it left off Saturday as the defending champions kicked off the 2013 IIHF under-18 women's world championship with a 4-1 win over Hungary.

Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Cassidy Carels, Karly Heffernan and Eden Murray scored for Canada and netminder Jessica Dodds made 10 saves for the victory.

?We didn?t have a lot of success early but the great thing is the girls just stuck with the game plan and they kept working at it,? said Canadian coach Jim Fetter. ?We were able to create a little bit more offence in the third.?

Brykaliuk opened the scoring late in the first period at the Vierumaki Areena but Tifani Horvath tied the game midway through the second period.

Carels responded with a short-handed goal a few minutes later. Heffernan and Murray added insurance goals early in the final period.

Canada outshot Hungary 35-11.

In other preliminary round games, Finland edged Germany 3-2, the United States dumped Russia 7-0 and Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 3-2.

Canada will play host Finland on Sunday.

?We?re expecting the same type of challenge that we got from Hungary tonight,? Fetter said. ?They?re at home, they?re going to want to impress.?

The playoff round begins Wednesday and the medal games are set for next Saturday. Canada won last year?s tournament in the Czech Republic.

Outback Bowl Saturday Report : Sports : CarolinaLive.com

Read?more: Gamecocks, South Carolina, Outback Bowl, Michigan, Tampa, College Football, Steve Spurrier, College, NCAA Football

Steve Spurrier met with the media on Saturday afternoon following a morning practice at Jefferson High School in Tampa.? Here are some of the things discussed in the media session and can be heard by Spurrier in the video link above:

Two Quarterbacks

Dylan Thompson started two games for South Carolina in 2012 when Connor Shaw wasn't at 100 percent and he was impressive in both wins against East Carolina.? Connor Shaw is still the starter, but Spurrier is committed to getting Thompson on the field as well.? The hope for Spurrier is that Shaw goes most of the way, but in the end, the Gamecocks have a good problem with two signal callers who are capable of running the offense and winning games.?

Michigan has a two quarterback dilemma as well.? Denard Robinson suffered nerve damage to his elbow on October 27th.? He didn't throw a pass in the final two games for the Maize and Blue.? Because of that, wide receiver Devin Gardner will also play quarterback in the Outback Bowl with Robinson lining up at QB, RB and WR

Spurrier's Future

At age 67, Steve Spurrier says he feels like he did 20 years ago and with 30 wins in the last three years, it's safe to say he has plenty of job security.? He said that his ultimate goal is to not retire and that he'll resign if things ever get bad and not accept a buyout if he had years left on his contract.? He also spoke of having his two sons working on his staff and that he's comfortable with so much family around him in the Columbia area.

No Troubles "Knock on Wood"

Spurrier calls his group "mature" and doesn't have too many concerns about troubles off the field leading up to New Year's Day.?

Number Changes

Spurrier was amused by the fact that players can change numbers at any time and that a Gamecock receiver has a new number and that it's a secret.? He also joked that both of his punters wear #13.? He also took the time to take a jab at Notre Dame when they had two players with the same number on the field against Pitt.?

The Rest of the Week

The Gamecocks have one more practice on Sunday, followed by a walkthrough at Raymond James Stadium on New Year's Eve.? We'll post extended sound here on CarolinaLive.com leading up to the game as well as extended post-game reaction.?

Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked a late claim to the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner slammed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at the "TUF Finale" event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

Harlequins 26 London Irish 15

London Irish put up a dogged fight against league leaders Harlequins at Twickenham but ultimately came away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Ian Humphreys kicked five penalties for the Exiles as they matched their opponents for the majority of the game, but a late penalty try sealed their fate.

The teams exchanged penalties in the first-half and went in 6-6 at the break. Quins? Danny Care then went over shortly after the interval, with the video referee required to confirm the decision.

The boot of Humphries ensured Irish remained within touching distance of the score as he kicked a long-range penalty to bring the Exiles back into the game.

However, a penalty try, awarded with just three minutes left after two scrums had to be reset, ensured Conor O?Shea?s men ran out victors.

Irish were not helped either when new signing Pat Phibbs was sin-binned after deliberately knocking the ball out of Care?s hands close to the line.

The result capped a miserable end to 2012 for Brian Smith?s side, who have now extended their losing streak to seven matches in all competitions.

Reflecting on the game, Smith said: ?It?s disappointing because I felt our effort was worthy of something, but we?re big boys and we?ve just got to dust ourselves off and keep fighting.

?We?re happy with the effort, but bitterly disappointed coming up short both in terms of the result and not getting a bonus point.

?But we look at their side and think they?re a bit better along in terms of the development path than we are.

?Certainly up front they were very good but I thought our scrum was a lot more competitive than what they were rewarded for.?

Commenting on Danny Care?s try, Smith added: ?I thought it was touch and go because we had a chance to steal the ball under the posts, so it?s fine margins.

?The effort level was pretty good today, but we?ve got to hold our hands up too. We were probably overshadowed a little up front.

?Our lineout was good all day but in the last two we let ourselves down when we had a chance to claw something back out of the game.

?We?ve got to be brutally honest with ourselves and make sure our reaction to this performance is constructive.?

... and you were banging patchouli - Promiscuity and Sexual ...

mishasminions:

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FATHERS WHO MADE THIS SHOW POSSIBLE.
I STILL WONDER WHY THEY ARE NOT PROSTITUTES.

takonatural:

Stripper!Bobby AU?

thornshrike:

Well, there are some theories as to how Dean earned money when he was a teenager, none of them pleasant, but all of them fitting in nicely with his self-esteem issues.

bangingpatchouli:
I wish I could find the link, but Jensen in an old interview made reference to the things Dean might do to get money. Not in the past tense sense either. I doubt he was going as far as fans might, but taking a few bucks from a hot older woman? It isn?t something he?s mentioned again probably because of the speculation about Dean?s sexuality and shipping issues. Just speculating, but yeah. Fans spend a lot of time talking about Dean?s sexuality and issues, but little in regard to Sam. I find that subject ripe for analysis actually.?

terresdebrume:

I agree with you on that, people tend to see Sam as the goody two shoes who stayed with part-time jobs to get by but if I remember well, in the scene where Sam gives the Amulet to Dean, he more or less admits he stole the money for it. That, and we?ve also seen (in Scarecrow, I think) that he has no problem with stealing a car if the situation requires it.

I think even if Sam tried to stay as legal as he could, he grew hungry as much as Dean did and there were instances when he did shady things to get by (not to mention that if he knew about Dean accepting money in return for sexual favor, he may have wanted to spare his brother that, which made the need for money more pressing)

Honestly, if Sam was the uncaring or upitty boy/man some people make him sound like, he?d have had a thousand reasons to call social services on John, but he never did, because that would have meant risking separation from Dean. Plus, John may have been a terrible father, he was still his dad, and that plays a role, too.

Instead, I think he just did his best to balance things out between legally and illegally obtained money? until, of course, he went to Stanford, but even then there?s a possibility he got involved in not-too-clear stuff if he needed the money (though of course, since we?re unclear on what his financial situation was, it?s harder to determine)

bangingpatchouli:

Yeah, I agree. I think that Sam has an impulse to be on the straight an narrow because he sees it as how normal people live, however untrue that may be, but the fact is that just as lying is second nature to him, so I think would stealing or other criminal pursuits. Sam has always seemed to me to be more pragmatic than Dean. Dean may be a criminal, but he has certain principles which he won?t go against, Sam less so. Ruby is a perfect example of that. Sam is much more a means justify the ends kind of person.

The issue of Sam?s sexuality is interesting too. Generally speaking, Sam doesn?t get into sexual liaisons unless he romantically/emotionally involved with the woman. The only time we see him not be I think is with the medical examiner or when he was soulless, which I guess we view as Sam?s id. So certainly Sam has a strong sex drive, which he represses for whatever reason. Again, that?s ripe for analysis. Is it his attempt to not go down the path Dean did or something more? We can only conclude that Sam spends a lot of time with his right hand.

[This section deleted per the request of the blogger.]

bangingpatchouli:
That?s an interesting possibility [that Dean was sexually abused by a teacher] that I hadn?t considered. Every guy I know (I?m not talking 20-somethings, but men in their 40s and 50s) scoff at the idea of a teen guy/adult woman i.e. teacher scenario being abusive because they say it is every teen guy?s ultimate fantasy. I won?t call bullshit on their perspective since I think that teenage sexuality is a complicated issue and adults often deny teens sexual agency which can be damaging in itself. I know of at least one situation where a boy was victimized more by the adults insisting he was a victim than he was by the experience itself. None the less, I can see how a vulnerable kid like Dean could be taken advantage of.

I think we need to be careful though to perhaps not lay the blame on any one thing. We need to take a look too at the role model John presented to Dean. We know that Dean idolized his father to the point of listening to his music, wearing his jacket, and driving his car. It doesn?t take a stretch of imagination to think that Dean would also emulate his father?s behavior with women. We know that John drank heavily and on at least one occasion fathered a son outside a committed relationship. It?s doubtful that Kate Milligan was the only woman John had a casual sexual relationship with.

So, I think that Sam?s repressed sexuality may have as much to do with not wanting to be like his father as it does with anything. Sam rejected being like John in most things, so that makes sense. Again, I find Sam?s relationship with women fascinating. We have to accept I think that Sam had a loving, relatively positive relationship with Jess. At least that?s how Kripke presented it, and I think we have to accept that; although I find it surprising. Dean had a four years with a loving maternal figure, and of course, losing her left deep scars. Sam on the other hand, never had a woman in his life. As far as we know, until he met Amy as a teen, there was never a woman or girl who showed him any affection or interest other than perhaps the myriad teachers in the many schools he passed through. We just don?t have that information. And yet, we are led to believe that somehow Sam is able to form solid, healthy relationships with women. I wonder where that ability comes from when he has pretty much no experience with women at all.

sammysexual:

(Just gonna butt into this convo, sorry?)?

I think, when talking about Sam and Jess, it?s worth noting that they were only together for 18 months. That?s hardly enough time to get out of the honeymoon phase!?Additionally, I?ve always felt that, just like Dean said of John and Mary?s relationship ?It was only perfect after she died.? I?m sure it wasn?t all ideal. There must have been some issues or arguments between them, even though we?ll never get to learn what they were.

There?s also the fact that, while he doesn?t have a lot of experience with women, Sam is notoriously empathetic. Women aren?t that different from men. It?s not hard for someone as emotionally perceptive as Sam to anticipate what is expected of him, figure out what to say and do in unfamiliar situations, etc. (I can?t help thinking, though, how exhausting that probably was for him. I think in S1 he says something to the effect that, even at Stanford, he was always conscious of the fact that he wasn?t like everyone else, that he didn?t fit in, wasn?t normal.) It?s not a healthy basis for a relationship, and as much as I love Sam/Jess, I have to wonder if it could have ever lasted long term.

On the subject of Sam and sex, the thing that I always come back to is, to me, it seems that, where Dean is all about seeking physical intimacy, Sam seeks emotional intimacy instead - something he never got as a child (even though Dean obviously loves him, they are not an emotionally demonstrative family - far from it). Again, talking about Jess: They?re very young, still in school, they?ve been together less than two years, but not only are they living together, Sam?s already shopping for rings. Sure, some people fall in love and get married that quickly, but given that Sam is usually touted as the rational one, this seems significant to me.

He also talks about having a lot of difficulty forming relationships with other children his age because he can?t ever be open with them or maintain long term?relationships (this seems like it would apply to dating, as well). He?s with Amelia only a few months, and they?re already getting a house together.?

Given all this, I think Sam?s dislike of no-strings sex may be more about the fact that, for him, there?s no real pleasure in it without the emotional intimacy. It?s the same reason Soulless!Sam had tons of casual sex; he didn?t need to feel that connection. And regular, soul-having Sam? He?s all about wanting to feel those connections, to feel like he belongs, to be accepted. Loved. But the way he bases his relationships around those feelings and ties up his self worth into them isn?t really any healthier than Dean?s method of dealing with his own issues, IMO.

bangingpatchouli:
?It?s not hard for someone as emotionally perceptive as Sam to anticipate what is expected of him, figure out what to say and do in unfamiliar situations, etc?

This is such a good point because it?s exactly what Sam has done in all of his outside relationships. It?s what he did all the way through elementary and high school into college, so why should a relationship with a woman be any different. Yes, he did tell Dean in S1 that he felt like an outsider at Stanford. I?ve always wondered too if Sam and Jess could have made it long-term.

Your entire comment here is very perceptive. Sam does jump into relationships very quickly. Look how he dove in with Madison over the course of just a couple of days. Maybe that?s why Dean quit encouraging Sam with girls after that; he saw how quickly and completely Sam devoted himself to a relationship and knew how emotionally dangerous that was in their life.

The other thing that strikes me with Jess and Amelia is that Sam didn?t tell either of them about who and what he really is. Dean asked him in the pilot if Jess knew about who he was and the things he?d done. Sam said, no, and she never would. Dean said,?Well, that?s healthy. I have a feeling that in Sam?s desire for love and affection and acceptance, he?s willing to hide not just the literal truth of who he is, but aspects of his character and personality. He would be willing to try to be whatever the other person needed or wanted. That is not a good basis for a relationship and couldn?t be maintained long-term. Over the course of time, how satisfying would a relationship be if he knew that the other person didn?t know the real him? You?re right, it would be exhausting to constantly anticipate another person?s desires and ultimately unfullfilling on an emotional level.

Thanks for butting in.

Obviously the press release about the matter doesn't mention any reasons, but we can assume the show is closing because of poor ticket sales. January is a notoriously difficult frozen tundra for many a Broadway show to traverse, and Dead Accounts just didn't have it. So the cast is being spared the agony of trying. ...

au by KDDI is Japan?s best mobile carrier

Smartphone HolderThis will most likely be the last proper survey for 2012, a look by MMD, Mobile Marketing Data Laboratory, at mobile carrier satisfaction levels, as reported by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Few demographics were given, just that on the 18th and 19th of December 2012 664 members of the MMD monitor group between the ages of 20 and 59 and who owned a smartphone from either docomo, au or SoftBank completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The results were listed alongside the results of a similar survey from May 2012.

Note that docomo only has seen a significant drop in satisfaction with signal strength and talk area; perhaps one reason is that there has been a number of network outages over the summer, and I still see occassional dropping out of my 3G signal in and around train stations at rush hour.

Research results

Note that the following question was most likely asked as describing how satisified one was, perhaps ?Satisified?, ?Somewhat Satisfied?, ?Can?t say/no answer?, ?Somewhat dissatisfied?, and ?Dissatisfied?. The two percentages for the positive answers were then added together to give the following charts.

China tightens Internet controls, legalizes post deletion

5 hrs.

China unveiled tighter Internet controls on Friday, legalizing the deletion of posts or pages which are deemed to contain "illegal" information and requiring service providers to hand over such information to the authorities for punishment.

The rules signal that the new leadership headed by Communist Party chief Xi Jinping will continue muzzling the often scathing, raucous online chatter in a country where the Internet offers a rare opportunity for debate.

The new regulations, announced by the official Xinhua news agency, also require Internet users to register with their real names when signing up with network providers, though, in reality, this already happens.

Chinese authorities and Internet companies such as Sina Corp have long since closely monitored and censored what people say online, but the government has now put measures such as deleting posts into law.

"Service providers are required to instantly stop the transmission of illegal information once it is spotted and take relevant measures, including removing the information and saving records, before reporting to supervisory authorities," the rules state.

The restrictions follow a series of corruption scandals amongst lower-level officials exposed by Internet users, something the government has said it is trying to encourage.

Li Fei, deputy head of parliament's legislative affairs committee, said the new rules did not mean people needed to worry about being unable to report corruption online. But he added a warning too.

"When people exercise their rights, including the right to use the Internet, they must do so in accordance with the law and constitution, and not harm the legal rights of the state, society ... or other citizens," he told a news conference.

Chinese Internet users already cope with extensive censorship measures, especially over politically sensitive topics like human rights and elite politics, and popular foreign sites Facebook, Twitter and Google-owned YouTube are blocked.

Earlier this year, the government began forcing users of Sina's wildly successful Weibo microblogging platform to register their real names.

The new rules were quickly condemned by some Weibo users.

"So now they are getting Weibo to help in keeping records and reporting it to authorities. Is this the freedom of expression we are promised in the constitution?" complained one user.

"We should resolutely oppose such a covert means to interfere with Internet freedom," wrote another.

The government says tighter monitoring of the Internet is needed to prevent people making malicious and anonymous accusations online, disseminating pornography and spreading panic with unfounded rumors, pointing out that many other countries already have such rules.

Despite periodic calls for political reform, the party has shown no sign of loosening its grip on power and brooks no dissent to its authority.

2012 iMore editors choice awards

2012 iMore editors choice awards

iMore honors the very best iOS devices and features, news and events, apps and accessories of 2012

They're what change the way you have fun and get things done. What make you replace what's in your pocket, in your lap, on your Home screen, in your workflow, and on your mind. What challenges your preconceptions, has you instantly forget what came before, and make it impossible to imagine how you'd do without them. They're the devices, events, apps, and games that affected us the most, and they're our 2012 editors choice award winners.

Device of the year: iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 was rebuilt from casing to processor. With an all-new, aluminum unibody, a 4-inch in-cell display, international LTE, and Apple's first custom designed system-on-a-chip, the Apple A6, it's not only the best phone of 2012, it's the best phone ever made.

Story of the year: Tim Cook's Apple

Tim Cook's Apple

Some years it's one single event, one person, one thing, that stands out from all the rest. Other years it's an overarching theme that ties many disparate threads together, and that what stands out. This year is one of those years. From stock price to hirings and firings, from an unprecedented amount of new products to huge black eye from new mapping data, from winning billions from Samsung in the U.S. to losing dignity from the courts in the U.K, it's Apple in its first year under Tim Cook that's our story of 2012.

Failure of the year: Apple online services

No skin in the Game Center

It would be easy to point the finger at iOS 6 Maps as being the single biggest point of failure for Apple this year. But they're merely a symptom of a much larger problem -- Apple's online services. Unlike Apple's hardware and software, which have been relentlessly improved over the years, there's little outward evidence that their services architecture has received anywhere near the same level of attention. Indeed, repeated Siri, iMessage, Game Center, and iCloud failures suggest the opposite. As Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and other competitors continue to roll out more and better cloud features, moving to a modern, extensible, scalable online system is increasingly critical for Apple.

iPhone social app of the year: Twitterrific 5

Twitterrific 5 brings gorgeous new design, vicious new speed to iPhone and iPad

Twitterrific predates the App Store, and has gone through several major revisions over the years, re-inventing itself several times. Twitterrific 5 is no exception. With a modern design as blacked-out as the iPhone 5, delightful Ollie-to-refresh animation, and shocking speed, renewed focus on core features, and remarkable perseverance in the face of Twitter's growing client-app hostility, Twitterrific 5 and the Iconfactory showed that even the oldest of birds can learn new tricks.

iPad social app of the year: Tweetglass

Tweetglass for iPad review

Tweetglass, n?e Quip, is a decidedly conversational twist on on the Twitter timeline. It shows the advantage Twitter gains by exposing an API for developers to build just exactly these kinds of speciality clients, something you don't see with Facebook or Google+ apps. Or at least it did, since Twitter is now intent on ending just exactly these kinds of speciality clients. We'll likely see innovation move to app.net, but sadly not at the same scale, at least not for a long while.

iPhone utility of the year: Launch Center Pro

"Launch actions not apps" is what App Cubby's Launch Center Pro promises and -- within the confines of Apple's no-intents, no-contracts, no-nothing-but-URL-schemes restrictions -- is exactly what it delivers. With a tap, Launch Center Pro not only allows you to get to your most-used apps, but to specific things within those apps, like new events or messages. Coordinating all the URL schemes with other developers can't have been easy, but from concept to execution, especially after Apple pulled URL schemes from Settings, Launch Center Pro makes it feel easy. Launch Center Pro has made its way onto many a geek Dock this year, and deservedly so.

iPad utility of the year: 1Password 4

As good as 1Password is for keeping all your secrets accessible and secure on your iPhone, as tablets take over more and more of our casual computing time, it's become just as important on the iPad. And since the new version, 1Password 4, is a universal app, and supports seamless integration with Dropbox and iCloud, the whole is now even better than the sum of the parts. With a new, simplified design, support for favorites and folders, and a fully-featured, tabbed browser, 1Password has become all but indispensable.

iPhone productivity app of the year: Fantastical for iPhone

Fantastical comes to iPhone, makes appointment entry ridiculously easy

If you need evidence that Apple execs don't keep their own schedules, simply launch a built-in Calendar app and the case is closed. Rather than simply bemoan that fact, however, Flexibits chose to reverse-Sherlock Apple and release Fantastical. With natural language input and slick, bi-directional scrolling for lookup, Fantastical lets you get your events and appointments into, and out of, your iPhone calendar more quickly and easily than ever before.

iPad productivity app of the year: Diet Coda

App of the Week: Diet Coda for iPad

Panic's Coda is a powerhouse on the Mac, combining code editing, preview, FTP, and more into one, integrated, web development app. Diet Coda is a brilliant distillation that, through tough choices, brings as much of that functionality to the iPad as possible. You probably won't be able to create your web presence on Diet Coda, but for quick fingered bug fixes on-the-go, or for Bluetooth keyboard-power code sprints on the road, Diet Coda is damn near perfect.

Reading app of the year: The Magazine

The Magazine made stronger, faster, better

Surprise, surprise. It took an indie iOS developer -- albeit it a brilliant one in Marco Arment -- to show traditional media companies how to make a great Newsstand app. A universal app, it supports both iPhone and iPad, and unlike many of those traditional apps, The Magazine actually works just as well, if not better, on the go and on the smaller screen. With a fortnightly release schedule, highly efficient format, elegant design, and beyond professional content, The Magazine serves as a blueprint for digital authenticity and modern publishing alike.

Education app of the year: Wonders of the Universe

Wonders of the universe is a phenomenal educational tool that has the perfect mix of video, images, text, and hands-on interaction. On the surface you have Professor Brian Cox -- a particle physicist, Royal Society research fellow, and professor at the University of Manchester -- taking you on a guided tour of the cosmos. Beneath the surface you have some incredibly clever coding and an amazing presentation engine that makes you feel like you're gliding across space, staring across the stars.

Music app of the year: Figure

Not quite a musical instrument and not quite a toy, Propellerhead Software's Figure occupies a magical sweet spot in-between. Experienced musicians will appreciate the relative depth of options, but anyone can pick up Figure and create something listenable in minutes. With its gorgeous UI, abstracted away from the skeuomorphic knobs and dials that plague so many iOS music apps, Propellerhead seems to have a vision for the future of music that begins with empowering and encouraging everyone to create.

Photography app of the year: Camera+

Camera+ has always been an exceptional photography app, but with this year's release of Camera+ 3, it got even better. With an improved interface, focus and exposure locks, improved sharing, improved performance, and much more, Camera+ helps you become the awesome mobile photographer you're meant to be. And if you use both an iPhone and iPad, you photos will sync between your devices over iCloud so that you can take your photos on your iPhone then edit on your iPad. Camera+ is how iOS photography was meant to be done.

Kids app of the year: Little Fox Music Box

Little Fox Music Box is a interactive music and sing-along app for kids that includes three songs: London Bridge, Evening Song, and Old Mac Donald. With each song, there is a scene that's related to the theme of the song. Each of these scenes is filled with artwork and animations that your child can interact with. There are very little things on the screen that don't react to touch making Little Fox Music Box a toddler's dream app. It's also great for parents to interact with their child at the same time by identifying objects and animals and prompting their child to tap specific things.

Puzzle game of the year: Letterpress

Providing proof positive that talented indie devs can code circles around even the biggest, best software houses on the planet, Loren Brichter's Letterpress instantly made every other word game on every platform look outdated and inelegant by comparison. From it's clean, crisp look and delightful animations, to it's simple, engaging audio, to its Game Center-toppling friend-vs-friend gaming dynamic, Letterpress is perfect from pixel to bit.

Action game of the year: Dead Trigger

Dead Trigger, as run-and-gun zombie-genre first person shooters go, is unabashedly cheesy, chock-full of snappy one-liners, and over-the-top non-player characters. The graphics are the real showstopper though - you will be hard-pressed to find more disgusting walking dead anywhere else on a phone or tablet. The graphics are awesome. Lighting is rich and dynamic, 3D models are stunning, and there are plenty of graphical effects like water droplets complete with visual distortion, lens flare, and fog. It's the kind of game you show off almost as much as you play.

RPG of the year: Battleloot Adventure

While the classic RPG mechanics are a familiar sight, there are a few real-time twists on the turn-based combat that keeps players on their toes. The cardboard cutout art style is definitive and unique - the big bobble-heads, as goofy as they are, really grow on you. Between weapons, armor, equipment, talent, and hero selection, the amount of customization is absolutely great. All in all, Battleloot Adventures provides a fine mix of old mechanics and new twists; lighthearted art style and deep gameplay.

Racing game of the year: Super Hexagon

iMore Editors' Choice for September 16, 2012

Super Hexagon is an intense and obscenely difficult abstract puzzle game with an awesome 8-bit soundtrack. By tapping and holding left and right sides of the screen, you move a small triangle around a stationary hexagon to avoid getting squished by lines and shapes that drift inwards. Sounds easy right? Well, the speed, randomness, and continually shifting colors, perspectives, and shapes may give you more than you bargained for.

Strategy game of the year: Devil's Attorney

Devil's Attorney revolves around a skeezy lawyer in the '70s called Max McMann. With twists logic and befuddling charisma, he dismantles lawsuits against shady characters, earns a profit, and decks out his apartment in the gaudiest things you could imagine. The game has a cartoony, colorful art style, and excellent voice acting that fully conveys McMann's sleaze and depravity. The game mechanics are also solid. Every round in the court room, action points are spent on abilities like "Reverse Psychology" to reduce the credibility of evidence, lawyers, and witnesses. Home decor enhances materialism, decadence and vanity scores to unlock new abilities.

Would You Want to Be Married to You; 6 Questions to Ask Yourself ...

I know the quick and easy response for most people reading this will be a resounding yes. But if we reflected on that question a little bit longer will every part of us really be able to say yes? It is natural to think very highly of ourselves and what we bring to a relationship. However, there is a great benefit in owning up to those not so great habits that show up in our relationship too.

If the roles were reverse in our marriage and we are able to walk in our spouse?s shoes, what are some things we would notice right away? If we were completely honest, I wonder what would work our nerves and what we would enjoy the most. Would we find that we make the relationship a little easier or that we bring most of the drama. If we were our spouse, how would we handle being married to a person like us? ?Consider each of the situations below in order to determine whether or not you are an ideal spouse.

  • Do you make your house a home? Is your home a place both of you look forward to coming back to at the conclusion of a long day? Is it peaceful or cold and filled with commotion? Is there a space to relax and unwind or is there complete chaos in every corner?
  • Do you look for reasons to complain? Are you a nagger? Are you known for being able to find what?s wrong in a situation and never miss an opportunity to point it out?
  • Is there laughter, spontaneity and fun? Do you focus on ways to bring excitement into the marriage or is it the same thing all the time?
  • How often do you and your spouse touch? Is it rare? I don?t mean intercourse, I mean physical connection. Is there daily touching, hugging and kissing?
  • Are you easy to talk to? Do you listen to your spouse and make them feel comfortable communicating with you? Do you give honest feedback rooted in love?
  • Are you full of excuses? Do you use them as the reason you don?t show up better in your marriage?

As I thought about this question, I think I was able to eventually say yes, but I admit I have some areas I need to work on. But overall, I am confident in the effort that I am putting into my relationship. I want my house to be warm and loving and a place we are both excited to return to. Instead of complaining, I will put in the work to improve what isn?t working. I plan to maintain excitement and consistently look for new ways to share with my love. Physical connection will also be more present in my relationship and I will make it easy for my spouse to communicate with me about anything. I desire to be the type of spouse that I expect my husband to be.

BMWK, would you want to be married to you? Why or why not?

Hillary Clinton to return to work next week

For a moment there, we almost believed it: Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz's radical solution for the ongoing fiscal cliff nightmare, and maybe politics entirely, was going to work. Scrawling a vaguely political message on paper cups containing overpriced coffee would deliver us from partisan politics, from disagreement itself. We were going to Come Together? while consuming a Trenta vanilla soy half-caf latte?with extra chocolate drizzle.

Los Angeles collects most guns ever, in post-Newtown buyback event

Police collected more than 2,000 firearms Wednesday in Los Angeles, during a gun buyback event held less than two weeks after the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn. Do such city initiatives help reduce gun violence?

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / December 27, 2012

The city of Los Angeles, one of several municipalities to hold a gun buyback event since the Dec. 14 mass shooting in Newton, Conn., collected more than 2,000 firearms ? a record, police officials reported Thursday.

Los Angeles had moved up the date of its no-questions-asked gun turn-in with the hope that the Newtown tragedy would prompt residents to surrender some firearms, thereby reducing the number of guns in circulation. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the city would gave $100 to $200 gift cards in exchange for each gun recovered.

At a press conference Thursday, police officials said they collected 2,037 firearms, surpassing the 1,673 guns collected last year.

Los Angeles is the largest city to host a gun buyback day since the Newtown shootings, which killed 20 schoolchildren, six school faculty and staff, and the gunman's mother. Smaller cities have made similar calls for guns, including Evanston, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, which collected 45 firearms, mostly handguns, in exchange for cash. Last Saturday outside Miami in Opa-Locka, Fla., 100 firearms were collected, almost double the total collected in a similar buyback event in June.

A buyback event is planned Saturday in Bridgeport, Conn. ? about 30 miles from Newtown ? and city officials say repeat dates are scheduled every Saturday in January.?

Forty-one members of the US House of Representatives, all Democrats, are calling for a federal gun buyback program. The letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R) and majority leader Nancy Pelosi (D), co-written by US Reps. Gerald Connolly of Virginia and Ted Deutch of Florida, asks for $200 million to fund a program that ?could remove as many as 1 million guns from our streets.?

?The murder of 20 youngsters and five educators in their classrooms has galvanized the public?s desire for immediate action, and partnering with the States on a nationwide gun buyback program is a modest, common sense start,? they wrote.

Five questions that will be answered by UFC 155

The UFC's end-of-the-year cards are usually stacked. Despite injuries, UFC 155 is no different. It features intriguing bouts that will answer some burning questions.

Did a knee injury hold back Cain Velasquez the first time he fought Junior dos Santos? When the two first met up last November, Velasquez reportedly had a badly injured knee. He was knocked out in 64 seconds. This time a (seemingly) healthy Velasquez will get to show if he deserves the heavyweight belt.

Has Chris Leben returned to form, for really real this time? Since Leben was on the original "Ultimate Fighter," he has been a man who wrestled with his demons. Most recently, those demons took the form of a banned pain killer which resulted in a one-year suspension from the UFC. Against Derek Brunson, Leben can show he's again the man who knocked out Wanderlei Silva.

Can Tim Boetsch be the next guy to challenge Anderson Silva? Though his original bout with Chris Weidman was called off because of an injury to Weidman, Boetsch still has another opportunity to show he can beat up opponents. He wants a chance to beat up Silva,* and this bout with Costa Phillippou is an opportunity for Boetsch's fighting to shine.

Or should Alan Belcher be the man to take on Silva? It's been more than three years since Belcher lost a fight. His last four fights have been stoppage wins. An impressive win over Yushin Okami could put him in line to fight for the middleweight belt.*

Is Todd Duffee still the knockout artist who once graced the octagon? Back in 2009, Duffee knocked out Tim Hague in a mere seven seconds. After that, the hype train was running behind him full steam. It was derailed when Mike Russow came back to knock Duffee out in the third round of their bout. Duffee was cut from the UFC, and is getting another shot at the octagon on Saturday. He'll fight Philip De Fries on the Facebook preliminaries, and get a chance to show if he can still knock people out very quickly.

*Assuming the next middleweight belt is based on competitiveness and earning a title shot by fighting, not by calling opponents out. Considering what has happened recently in the UFC welterweight and light heavyweight divisions, there are no guarantees.
