Duvalier defies court order to face human rights accusations

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier defied a judge's order to appear in court on Thursday to face charges he was responsible for corruption and serious human rights violations during his 15-year rule.

Duvalier had already boycotted two previous court hearings, and Judge Jean-Joseph Lebrun, head of the court of appeals, responded to the latest snub by ordering that Duvalier be escorted to court by law enforcement officials next week.

The presence of the 61-year-old former "president for life" was "imperative," Lebrun said.

Reynold Georges, who heads Duvalier's legal team, argued unsuccessfully before Lebrun that his client's presence was not required.

Duvalier returned to the impoverished Caribbean nation in January 2011 after 25 years of exile and was briefly detained on charges of corruption, theft and misappropriation of funds that are still pending against him.

A separate set of charges of crimes against humanity filed by alleged victims of wrongful imprisonment, forced disappearances and torture under Duvalier, was set aside by an investigating judge last year.

The judge ruled that the statute of limitations for those alleged crimes had run out. But the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, has warned Haitian authorities that there is no statute of limitations under international law for serious violations of human rights.

"I encourage the judicial authorities to act on their responsibilities and ensure the victims are provided with the long overdue justice they deserve," Pillay said in a recent statement.

She was referring to a catalog of crimes and abuses that human rights watchdogs say were committed with impunity under Duvalier.

Duvalier's flight into exile in 1986 ended nearly three decades of dictatorship begun by his father, Fran?ois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier.

The Duvaliers enforced their rule with the aid of a feared militia, the National Security Volunteers, better known as the Tonton Macoutes, who were blamed for hundreds of deaths and disappearances.

Human rights advocates said Thursday's ruling by Lebrun marked an important step forward for a country searching for political stability after decades of dictatorship, military rule and economic mayhem.

"He tried to get away with it, but this decision proves he is not above the law," said Reed Brody, a spokesman for Human Rights Watch, who has worked with the victims in the case and attended the hearing.

"It's a chink in his armor of impunity," he said. "It's now up to the authorities to make sure that this warrant is swiftly executed and that Duvalier is brought to court."

Clive Davis fires back after Kelly Clarkson slam

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Thanks to Kelly Clarkson, the soundtrack to Clive Davis' life is more discord than harmony these days.

With the release this week of his memoir, "The Soundtrack of My Life," the legendary music mogul made headlines for revealing, among other things, that he is bisexual and clashed with his "American Idol" prot?g?.

Davis claims in the tell-all that Clarkson "burst into hysterical sobbing" after first hearing her hit songs "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and fought to cut them from her 2004 album, "Breakaway."

"It was a very tough conversation, and it didn't get any easier when Kelly burst into hysterical sobbing," he writes. "We all just sat there and she cried for a several minutes."

Clarkson -- who recently earned rave reviews for her not-lip-synched performance??of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at the recent presidential inauguration -- remembers their dispute very differently, and slammed the record producer Tuesday for "spreading false information" about her and her music.

"I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans," she wrote on WhoSay.

"It feels like a violation. Growing up is awesome because you learn you don't have to cower to anyone -- even Clive Davis."

Clarkson acknowledged that she "did cry in his office once," but it was in response to his censure of her autobiographical song "Because of You."

"I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 's----- writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.' ? This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with."

"(He) belittled me and my music and completely sabotaged ('My December')," she added about Davis' response to her third album.

"It never had a chance to reach (its) full potential ... the fact that I was so completely disregarded and disrespected was so disheartening," she wrote.

Davis fired back Tuesday, insisting that he told the truth in his account of their "creative differences":

"I am truly very sorry that she has decided to take issue with what I know to be an accurate depiction of our time together," he tweeted. "Before the book was published, I had every fact checked with five independent individuals who were present on a daily basis throughout it all. The chapter as it is written was thoroughly verified by each and every one of them. I stand by the chapter as written in my book."

Still, the 80-year-old music executive continued to praise Clarkson as a "tremendous vocal talent and performer." ?

"I wish, and will always wish, Kelly's talent and her career to soar to ever new heights," he concluded.

Rocky Bleier named Grand Marshal of Memorial Day Parade

From the City of Myrtle Beach:?

Army veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers' running back Rocky Bleier will serve as the Grand Marshal of this year's Memorial Day Weekend Parade on Ocean Boulevard. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, and is a highlight of May's Military Appreciation Days. This month-long celebration is sponsored by the City of Myrtle Beach and PGBA, LLC, as a "thank you" to our dedicated service men, women and families for all that they do on our behalf.?

As Grand Marshal, Rocky Bleier will lead the Ocean Boulevard parade, then greet fans immediately afterward at the Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North. Everyone's invited to enjoy the festivities, which include military exhibits and displays and live music by the Andrew Thielen Big Band. The picnic lunch, prepared by the Omar Chefs Shriners, is free for active-duty military personnel, veterans and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.?

Rocky Bleier's life story is a gripping tale of courage on the football fields of America and the battlefields of Vietnam. A 1968 graduate of Notre Dame University, Bleier was drafted by the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers in the 16th round. As his first season ended, he was drafted again by the US Army in December 1968, putting his football career on hold.?

Bleier volunteered to serve in Vietnam, arriving there in May 1969 with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. On August 20, 1969, his platoon ran into an ambush, and his legs were seriously wounded by rifle fire and grenade fragments. The US Army Specialist 4 was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Bleier survived the injuries but could barely walk, and doctors advised that he would never play football again.

A year later, still weak, he reported to the Steelers' training camp but didn't make the starting roster. Undaunted, Bleier drove himself for two years to overcome the physical obstacles. Little by little, he fought back, successfully re-joining the Steelers' line-up in 1972. By 1974, he'd earned a starting spot as a running back for a team that won four Super Bowls and even caught the go-ahead touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw in Super Bowl XIII. Bleier retired after the 1980 season with a career total of 3,865 rushing yards, 136 receptions and 25 touchdowns.

The Military Appreciation Days Committee is excited to have Rocky Bleier as the Grand Marshal for the 2013 Memorial Day Weekend Parade on Saturday, May 25. Bleier's military service, determination, optimism and inspiration are a perfect fit for May's month-long recognition of our service men and women and our military heritage here in Myrtle Beach.

Entries are being accepted now for the Memorial Day Weekend Parade. Interested groups and businesses will find parade materials on-line at www.militaryappreciationdays.com. In addition, local attractions, accommodations and restaurants are offering military and veteran discounts during the month of May. Other activities during Military Appreciation Days include concerts, a 5K walk/run and the traditional Memorial Day ceremony.

Weekly Recipe | Lunch for one ~ Kale Pasta | Real Foods Market

A simple lunch or dinner dish for one (or double it if you want extra to pack for tomorrows lunch). Do you ever have kale sit in your fridge and you somehow forgot it was there?! Well hopefully you are better and using up that beautiful green kale you purchased than I am! Either way, this is a great recipe for that said kale that might be looking a little bit wilted. Let?s revive it in this delicious recipe!!!

Thanks to Jess for this recipe and photo!

Simple Spaghetti with Kale, Lemon and Garlic (PDF)

Made with a few sprigs of leftover kale, great olive oil, and a touch of spice, this simple lunch for one is quick and reasonably healthy. Double or quadruple the recipe as needed, piling the extra kale on top at the end.

TIME: 15 minutes
MAKES: 1 lunch

Spaghetti for one (a bundle about the diameter of a dime)
2 tablespoons good extra virgin olive oil
5 sprigs lacinato kale (droopy kale is fine), very finely chopped
Pinch red pepper flakes
Real salt and freshly ground pepper
1 large garlic clove, finely chopped
Juice of 1 lemon wedge
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Cook the pasta al dente according to package directions.

When the pasta is almost done, heat the oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the kale, red pepper flakes to taste, and season with salt and pepper. Cook and stir for 3 or 4 minutes, until the kale starts to get a bit crisp. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for another minute. Add drained pasta, lemon juice, and Parmesan cheese, and stir to combine. Serve immediately.

Males' superior spatial ability likely is not an evolutionary adaptation; Testosterone 'side effect'?

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Males and females differ in a lot of traits (besides the obvious ones) and some evolutionary psychologists have proposed hypotheses to explain why. Some argue, for example, that males' slight, but significant, superiority in spatial navigation over females -- a phenomenon demonstrated repeatedly in many species, including humans -- is probably "adaptive," meaning that over the course of evolutionary history the trait gave males an advantage that led them to have more offspring than their peers.

A new analysis published in The Quarterly Review of Biology found no support for this hypothesis. The researchers, led by University of Illinois psychology professor Justin Rhodes, looked at 35 studies that included data about the territorial ranges and spatial abilities of 11 species of animals: cuttlefish, deer mice, horses, humans, laboratory mice, meadow voles, pine voles, prairie voles, rats, rhesus macaques and talastuco-tucos (a type of burrowing rodent). Rhodes and his colleagues found that in eight out of 11 species, males demonstrated moderately superior spatial skills to their female counterparts, regardless of the size of their territories or the extent to which males ranged farther than females of the same species.

The findings lend support to an often-overlooked hypothesis, Rhodes said. The average superiority of males over females in spatial navigation may just be a "side effect" of testosterone, he said. (Previous studies have shown that women who take testosterone tend to see an improvement in their spatial navigation skills, he said.)

The analysis adds a new dimension to an ongoing debate about the evolutionary significance of some baffling human traits. Rhodes and his colleagues object to "creation stories" that seek to explain sexual phenomena like the female orgasm, rape or menopause by hypothesizing that they evolved because they provided an evolutionary advantage. Some evolutionary psychologists describe rape, for example, as an alternate mating strategy for males who otherwise are reproductively unsuccessful. Others say menopause evolved in women to enhance the survival of their genes by increasing the time spent nurturing their grandchildren. Some of these hypotheses seem intuitive, Rhodes said. "But these stories generally are not testable."

Researchers tend to overlook the fact that many physical and behavioral traits arise as a consequence of random events, or are simply side effects of other changes that offer real evolutionary advantages, he said.

"For example, women have nipples because it's an adaptation; it promotes the survival of their offspring," Rhodes said. "Men get it because it doesn't harm them. So if we see something that's advantageous for one sex, the other sex will get it because it's inheriting the same genes -- unless it's bad for that sex."

Similarly, scientists who claim that the different spatial skills in men and women are adaptive must explain why women failed to inherit the superior spatial skills of their navigationally enhanced fathers, Rhodes said.

"The only way you will get a sex difference (in an adaptive trait) is where a trait is good for one sex and bad for the other," he said. "But how is navigation bad for women? This is a flaw in the logic." "When people hear arguments made or stories told, particularly about human behaviors being products of adaptation, I think they should ask the question: 'Where is the evidence?' " Rhodes said.

Rhodes is an affiliate of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at Illinois.

The research team also included a philosopher from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a scientist from the University of California at Riverside.

Austrian lesbian couple win European adoption ruling

STRASBOURG (Reuters) - A lesbian couple who want to jointly raise one partner's child have won their case at the European Court for Human Rights, which ruled that Austria's adoption laws discriminated against gay people on that issue.

The case was brought in 2007 by the unnamed women, both born in 1967. They live with one partner's son, who was born out of wedlock in 1995.

The couple had lost a legal battle in Austria that sought to challenge the fact that an unmarried man or woman in a heterosexual relationship could adopt and jointly raise their partner's child, while that right was not extended to gay couples.

The European court found that the difference in treatment was based on sexual orientation. "No convincing reasons had been advanced to show that such difference in treatment was necessary for the protection of the family or for the protection of the interests of the child," it said in a statement.

The ruling is final, so Austria must comply with it. The court also ordered the country to pay the applicants 10,000 euros ($13,400) in damages and more than 28,000 euros in costs and expenses.

Off Beat: 'Top Gun' owes a debt to Vancouver fighter pilot

Monday, February 18, 2013

The new 3-D version of "Top Gun" owes its existence to the 1986 movie, but there is another contributor to its cinematic DNA. It's a film featuring ? and made possible by ? a Vancouver fighter pilot.

That documentary is "Threshold: The Blue Angels Experience."

A recent Columbian story told how Harley Hall was shot down on Jan. 27, 1973, during the last few hours of Vietnam War hostilities.

Some of his old friends who were interviewed for our story noted how Hall's personality and flying skills are evident in "Threshold," which was filmed when he commanded the Navy's Blue Angels precision flying team in the early 1970s.

Former Navy pilot Ernie Christensen also mentioned that camera innovations and filming techniques pioneered in "Threshold" were used in the filming of "Top Gun," which is being released on 3-D Blu-ray.

"We came up with shots and camera angles that had never been seen before," said "Threshold" producer-director Paul Marlow.

But before they could start filming, Marlow had to sell the idea to Hall.

"He was the key guy," Marlow said by phone from Seattle. "I was in the military, and you get an eye for spotting a leader. He was a leader.

"I told him that his business was to drum up recruiting for Navy aviation, and mine was to take pictures of interesting things."

Even though Marlow was a self-described long-haired guy in cowboy boots, during an era of protests against the war in Vietnam, Hall welcomed him.

"He got it," Marlow said.

And after seeing results of the filming, Hall and the other pilots were even more impressed, Marlow said.

"We'd share footage with the team and they'd egg each other on: 'Let's do this!'"

When the Blue Angels booked a South American tour, there was room for one film crew, Marlow said. Hall took along the "Threshold" team and rejected a request from the PR office at McDonnell Douglas -- the company that built the Blue Angels' F-4 Phantom II fighters.

Christensen, who commanded the "Top Gun" training program from 1981 to 1983, was the link between the documentary and people doing setup work for the Tom Cruise film.

"Some cinematographers were talking in the hallway and an ex-instructor introduced me," he said.

Christensen told them they would understand what it's like to be in the cockpit of a jet fighter if they saw "Threshold."

Baylor students lined the walls of Russell Gym and cheered on six Special Olympics teams walking in behind their team?s banner.

To kick off the Area 12 Special Olympics basketball tournament at Baylor this weekend, the teams made a lap around the gym and enjoyed the cheers and applause from their fans before competition began.

?The opening ceremony was so cool to watch,? said Colleyville junior Kat Ludlow. ?They made it kind of like the Olympics and had a torch that was passed from one team to another. It was a special moment for the athletes.?

Baylor has a Special Olympics volunteer group that puts on several events in conjunction with Area 12-Heart of Texas Special Olympics every year.

The tournament was a two-day event starting on Friday afternoon and finishing on Saturday. Dr. Margaret Wooddy, professor of health, human performance and recreation and director of human performance, was in charge of the event. With the help of student volunteers, she was able to give the athletes a weekend of competitive basketball and the chance to interact with other Special Olympic athletes from the Waco area.

Wooddy stressed how important having volunteers is. She said without people volunteering to come and help out, the event wouldn?t have even been possible. She was very thankful for the students that took time out of their busy schedules to come out and make the weekend special.

The Baylor volunteers were in charge of a variety of jobs throughout the weekend. Some helped set up and clean up the gyms before and after the event. Some worked the score tables during the games. But most of the volunteers were assigned to be fans of the teams and sit on their benches during games.

Naperville, Ill., junior Taylor Heatherly got the opportunity to spend the day with a team from Corsicana. She said that what she enjoyed most was the passion and joy that each of the athletes had throughout the tournament.

?This team was down the whole game and kept battling back,? Heatherly said. ?In the end, one of the players hit a 3-point shot to win the game and the team had a huge celebration. It was so awesome to see them rally together and achieve something like they did.?

Heatherly said she was also touched by the selflessness of the athletes.

?At the end of that big game the team decided to take a picture,? Heatherly said. ?One of the players said, ?This win is for my brother. He would be here but he?s in the hospital.? Another player said, ?It?s like God wanted us to win.??

Heatherly said it was worth her time to volunteer and she felt like she gained a lot from the experience. She said she was thankful for the opportunity to spend her day surrounded by such kind-hearted and spirited personalities and encouraged anyone who has the chance to volunteer at a Special Olympic event.

The weekend prior to the tournament, 16 group members participated in Waco?s third-annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. All of the money raised will be used to fund sports training and competitions for the 1,050 Special Olympic athletes in the Waco area.

The group also held a bake sale Monday on campus to help raise funds for the Heart of Texas Chargers, one of the teams that participated in the basketball tournament.

American Society for Microbiology

The new coronavirus that has emerged in the Middle East is well-adapted to infecting humans but could potentially be treated with immunotherapy, according to a study to be published on February 19 in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The study indicates that the virus HCoV-EMC can penetrate the lining of the passageways in the lung and evade the innate immune system as easily as a cold virus can, signs that HCoV-EMC is well-equipped for infecting human cells. The study also reveals that the virus is susceptible to treatment with interferons, components of the immune system that have been used successfully to treat other viral diseases, opening a possible mode of treatment in the event of a large-scale outbreak.

"Surprisingly, this coronavirus grows very efficiently on human epithelial cells," says co-author Volker Thiel of The Institute of Immunobiology at Kantonal Hospital in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Thiel says these new data indicate that although HCoV-EMC may have jumped from animals to humans very recently, it is just as well adapted to infecting the human respiratory tract as other, more familiar human coronaviruses, including the SARS virus and the common cold virus, HCoV-229E.

HCoV-EMC first came to light in June when it was isolated from a man in Saudi Arabia who died from a severe respiratory infection and kidney failure. Since that time, public health officials have identified an additional 10 infected persons, nine of whom had traveled in the Middle East and one who had recent contact with an infected person. The emergence of HCoV-EMC, which is related to the SARS virus, has raised concern that it may eventually lead to a pandemic much like the SARS pandemic of 2002-2003, which is estimated to have sickened over 8,000 people and killed 774 worldwide.

For the mBio study, Thiel and his colleagues tested how well HCoV-EMC could infect and multiply in the entryways to the human lung using cultured bronchial cells manipulated to mimic the airway lining. The lining of the lung, or epithelium, represents an important first barrier against respiratory viruses, but they apparently don't put up a big fight against HCoV-EMC, says Thiel. He and his colleagues found that human airway epithelial cells are highly susceptible to HCoV-EMC infection and that the virus is able to multiply at a faster initial rate than the SARS virus.

"The other thing we found is that the viruses [HCoV-EMC, SARS, and the common cold virus] are all similar in terms of host responses: they don't provoke a huge innate immune response," Thiel says. This is an indication that HCoV-EMC is already well adapted to the human host and that the virus uses that same strategy other coronaviruses use for evading the host's non-specific immune mechanisms.

The authors asked themselves whether boosting this weak immune response might diminish the virus' ability to infect airway epithelial cells. They found that pre-treating the cells with lambda-type interferons, proteins that are released by host cells in response to infection and enable communication between cells to mount an immune response, significantly reduced the number of infected cells. This is encouraging from a treatment standpoint, note the authors, since interferons have also shown a good deal of promise for treating SARS and another viral illness, Hepatitis C.

Thiel and co-author Ronald Dijkman emphasize that their work with HCoV-EMC would not have been possible without the efforts of many different research groups from Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Denmark.

Ongoing collaboration is crucial, they say. Future research to head off outbreaks of HCoV-EMC and other emerging diseases requires cooperation and trust among scientists and health agencies, a goal that is not always achieved. The future of this virus is uncertain, Thiel points out, but access to samples from a wider range of patients and epidemiological work could answer some fundamental questions, including where the virus is coming from and what the true prevalence of the virus is.

"We don't know whether the cases we observe are the tip of the iceberg," says Thiel. "Or whether many more people are infected without showing severe symptoms."

Turkey Quinoa Meatloaf with Sweet Potato Wedges
Yield: 8 servings

Turkey Quinoa Meatloaf

Ingredients
1 ? Tbsp. safflower oil
? cup white onion, finely diced
? cup carrots, finely diced
? cup celery, finely diced
? cup red pepper, finely diced
? cup yellow pepper, finely diced
? cup orange pepper, finely diced
1 cup kale, blanched, shocked and finely diced
2 Tbsp. Italian parsley, finely chopped
1 pound white meat turkey, ground
2 cups quinoa, cooked
Sea salt and pepper, to taste
? cup barbeque sauce

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. In a large saut? pan, sweat onions in safflower oil, until translucent. Add carrots, celery and peppers and continue cooking until soft. Set aside and let cool.
3. In a large mixing bowl, combine turkey, quinoa, cooked vegetables, kale and parsley. Season with sea salt and pepper. Mix by hand until thoroughly combined.
4. Shape mixture into two loaves, 9 x 4 inches.
5. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet.
6. Brush with your favorite BBQ sauce and bake for 45 minutes.
7. Let cool. Slice and enjoy!

Sweet & Spicy Sweet Potato Wedges
Yield: 6-8 servings
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients
2 pounds sweet potatoes, about 3 large potatoes
? cup coconut oil
2 Tbsp. coconut sugar
1 Tbsp. Sea Salt
1 Tbsp. Chipotle Powder

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
2. Scrub the potatoes well. Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise and then, if they are very long, in half crosswise. Cut each piece into wedges.
3. Put the sweet potatoes into a large bowl and add the oil. Mix well to combine. Sprinkle with salt, sugar and spices Use your hands to mix well, so all pieces are coated with oil and spices.
4. Spread the sweet potatoes out in a single layer on a baking sheet; the oil they are coated with should keep them from sticking to the pan.
5. Bake for a total of 25 to 30 minutes. After the first 15 minutes, remove the baking sheet from the oven and turn over all of the sweet potato wedges. Return to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until they are well browned. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Virginia OT Oday Aboushi Will Impress at NFL Combine

Jason O. Watson-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia only has one player participating in the NFL combine, but he?s a big one as offensive tackle Oday Aboushi has a chance to crack the first round and make a whole lot of money at his biggest job interview of his life.

A two-year starter for the Cavaliers, Aboushi is a better run blocker than he is against the pass, but is above-average at both. He won?t be confused for a road-grading tackle like D.J. Fluker and needs to hit the weight room to add strength and weight, but at 6-6 and 310-pounds has the frame to add the necessary bulk and already plays with a nasty disposition as evidenced by the heavy punch he delivers to defensive lineman.

Because of his physical nature and aggression, I think he ends up on the strong side and starts his career at right tackle, but with more seasoning could be moved to the blind side because he has adequate lateral agility and will surprise you with his athleticism. Aboushi shows a good knack for the game and his field awareness is one of his strengths, so he should be able to handle picking up complex NFL stunts and blitzes.

For those that haven?t seen what Aboushi did during his career at Virginia, he had a bit of a coming out party at the Senior Bowl when he looked like one of the best tackles at the game when he consistently dominated projected first-round Ezekial Ansah of BYU among others during the week in Mobile.

If Aboushi can impress during the interviews, show off his athleticism during the agility drills, put up 225-pounds during the bench press 30 times and run a 40-yard dash around the 5.10 mark, then Aboushi should crack the bottom of the first round and the Indianapolis Colts picking at No. 24 could use him to protect franchise quarterback Andrew Luck.

How to eat more salad

Don't limit salads to a side dish.?Eat them as main dishes, make your own dressing, and get creative by adding a wide variety of proteins and grains.

In Praise of Leftovers

One of my New Year's resolutions is to eat more salad. Clearly, a salad resolution is easier than some others. If you know some tricks, that is. One thing I'm proud of is that my friends and family report their salads have gotten progressively tastier and more interesting as a result of being around me. A girl has to leave some sort of legacy, right? That's mine.

Now that I'm sitting here thinking about it, I guess I have a lot of opinions and tips when it comes to salad. Are you ready for this??

You don't need lettuce to make a salad.?The one pictured here is curly kale and a couple huge handfuls of sprouts (which I'm really into right now and am growing on my kitchen counter). No lettuce. In the winter, cabbage is often the base of my salads. It's cheap, lasts forever in the fridge, and delivers a lot of nutritional bang for your buck. ?

Purchased salad dressing is a racket. A big one. Loaded with calories, expensive, and usually not very tasty. Often, I don't mix up a salad dressing. I just toss my whole salad with a big squeeze of lemon (or lime or vinegar), coarse salt and pepper, and a glug of olive oil. Just pour them right in the bowl and mix gently and well with your hands. If you're going to make dressing, the general rule is 1 part acid to 3 parts oil, plus salt (and pepper, if you're a pepper person). Of course you can endlessly variate this ? honey, apple cider vinegar, olive oil and garlic. Cilantro, sesame and vegetable oil, miso paste, and soy sauce. Find a favorite combo, make a big batch, and use it all week.

A little bit of fat or protein goes a long way, especially if you make a "chopped salad" (as opposed to layered or composed).? Some finely chopped almonds, a little bit of salami, ham turkey, bacon, or tuna, 1/2 a hard-boiled egg, a bit of crumbled feta or blue cheese, a handful of canned chickpeas, or a couple minced olives or anchovies are all you need to make your salad feel like a substantial meal. You can, of course, leave these things out, but I like finding those little nuggets in the tangle of veggies.

Make your salad components uniform in size. There's nothing worse than negotiating a giant chuck of carrot right next to some delicate greens. If you want chunky, make everything chunky (think Greek salad or Salad Nicoise.) A chopped salad (my favorite lately) means you can get a bite of almost everything in one forkful. It also means you're likely to eat more vegetables since they are hospitably cut.

Veggie prep on the weekends makes salad-eating a lot more likely.?Otherwise, you'll end up eating cheese and crackers all week. When I'm being good, I wash a few different kinds of greens and wrap them up in paper towels. Then whatever else is cheap and relatively in-season, washed and ready to go. In the winter, it's broccoli, cauliflower, red onions, green onions, radishes, hothouse cucumbers, cilantro, parsley, avocados.

Nuts. And other pantry luxuries. Almost everything is a salad possibility. I'm currently into smoked almonds. When you finely chop them (you just need a few) they taste like bacon in your salad. Some other favorites: olives, pepperocini, capers, raw sunflower seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, any kind of canned beans. Be careful with fruit ? canned, dried, fresh. Often it's delicious in salads, but you have to be a little more judicious with your combos. I wouldn't advise grapefruit with kidney beans, for instance. Oranges, walnuts, and red onions are a favorite combo. Or blue cheese with apples or pears and dried cherries or cranberries.

Cooked grains will make you feel so proud of yourself.?At the beginning of the week, cook something up ? brown rice, quinoa, farro, bulgur. Drain, toss with a bit of olive oil, and refrigerate. The possibilities are endless, including tossing cold grains with whatever salad you're making.?

Don't limit salads to a side dish.?Eat them as main dishes, and make them just for yourself.?I don't mind a plate of celery or carrot sticks, but you're likely to eat a lot more vegetables if you make them interesting.?

What are your favorite combos? What are you planning to do in 2013 that will make you stronger and healthier?
